𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 🔍 Sci-comm expert Dr. Julius Wesche (PhD) 🌏 and I tackle one of the biggest mistakes you can make when planning your research comms: trying to reach "the general public". Because “if you try to cater to everyone, you’re not catering to anyone” 😱 Instead, “define your audience with teeth” — 1️⃣🎯 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 — identify who it’s most important for you to reach, max 2-3 groups (if you’re not sure where to start, check out Prof Mark Reed’s three Is of stakeholder analysis — link in comments) 2️⃣🤝  𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 from your target groups to understand their needs 3️⃣📝  Build your strategy around 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀, 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀, not your assumptions And this is just one insight from the 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 in social media for researchers Julius provides in the latest ep of Amplifying Research. "A brilliantly planned and delivered online session - it gave young people a voice and gave parents confidence to reframe the way they look at their kids' online lives..." "Evidence based with real practical advice for those of us who are navigating this landscape with our children and young people. Refreshing and thoughtful antidote to the 'moral panic' that can surround this subject matter..." These are just some of the positive comments received about last week's online event from the University of Surrey led by Emily Setty, Dr Robyn Muir and Jonny Hunt as part of the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council Festival of Social Science. Having been working with young people and schools for many years, the team brought parents, practitioners and young people together to explore the benefits of reframing the often negative and alarmist headlines around children's digital lives. Parents walked away with an appreciation that banning smartphones and shutting down digital experiences is nowhere near as helpful as taking the time to co-navigate the online world hand-in-hand. Young people expressed a need for support including; screen time limits, phones removed at bedtime, open conversations about online safety, support to navigate inappropriate content, and finding a way to be trusted. They're worried about things like; online harm, fake news, eye strain, friendship pressures, bullying, spending too much money and dangerous people online. If you missed the session why not catch up online via the link below ⬇️ and share with friends or colleagues bringing up young people. With over a quarter of 5-7 year olds in the UK now owning a smartphone and active on social media (OFCOM April 2024) there has never been a better time to join the debate about how we can best support our young people. If you are a parent or teacher and would like to receive the slides and resources, find out more about the team's research, take part in an upcoming podcast or invite them to work with your school/college, please drop us a line: esrc-iaa@surrey.ac.uk #ourdigitallives #youngpeople #onlinesafety #parenting #socialmedia #supportingyoungpeople #healthydigitallives #impact #esrcfestival University of Bedfordshire https://lnkd.in/ep-P6NEm

Are you part of or responsible for a partnership where you're working towards shared outcomes or a vision for change? Sarah Morton has a mini webinar on evaluating the impact of partnerships, available to watch here and now!

Impact expert and founder of Matter of Focus. Helping public sector organisations and charities use data and evidence to track their impact so they can learn, improve and demonstrate impact

🤝 Are you working in partnership and want to understand your impact? 🤝 This was the topic for the conference I spoke at yesterday hosted by the UIIN. It was a great day and a chance to delve into the challenges like: 👉 How to measure complex change 👉 How to understand the contribution of different partners 👉 Highlighting how the partnership makes an impact In this recording of my short presentation, I talk through these challenges and set out steps to address them: 1️⃣ Clarify the intended partnership impacts 2️⃣ Clarify different partners’ contributions 3️⃣ Decide on data sources 4️⃣ Reflect, adapt learn improve The takeaways from the day for me are: ⭐ Keep focusing on what really matters about the partnership and how it will benefit people,- don’t get distracted by fancy data sets. ⭐ A plea (from me!) to ditch the 'measurement' word – we can’t measure a lot of this in the traditional sense, we need qualitative data – but we can ‘assess’ or ‘evaluate’. Thanks to the UIIN and everyone who made the discussion so rich

Congratulations to Katy Peters and the Guildford Shakespeare Company on a captivating, creative, and immersive event delivered this week as part of the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council Festival of Social Science. 🗡️ 🎭 Having witnessed the brutal stabbings of Mercutio and Tybalt in a scene from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, the stage was taped off as the audience donned full CSI suits, to discover how crime scene investigators work, and how the techniques they use affect court rulings. Using virtual reality to explore the University's brand new CSI flat (Romeo's flat!), a detailed hunt for vital information then began. Blood stains and daggers were examined, laptops were seized, clothing fibres tested, and evidence was prioritised for the courtroom. The audience learned how lawyers use and challenge forensic evidence during a trial, were encouraged to present evidence and cross-examine, hear arguments for the prosecution and the defence, and uncover the roles of those involved in real-life criminal trials. A full jury then had the difficult task of deciding what justice should look like for Romeo... Thank you to everyone who made this innovative experience happen, and helped showcase so many aspects of the University of Surrey's amazing Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences.
