Georgia’s 6-week ban was reinstated yesterday afternoon following a ruling from the state Supreme Court, just a week after the ban was blocked by a lower court. Our interactive map is up to date with Georgia moving from “Restrictive” to “Very Restrictive.” Reinstating this ban is a devastating violation of Georgians’ reproductive autonomy. This ban—like all abortion bans—is inhumane. Everyone should be able to access abortion in their community. The 6-week ban will remain in effect indefinitely as an appeal of the lower court’s decision makes its way through the state Supreme Court. We will monitor and share updates if anything changes. On Monday, the US Supreme Court once again refused to say that the federal Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA) requires emergency abortion care nationwide, regardless of state abortion policy. This decision will not change the status quo in Texas where the state's total ban forces patients to cross state lines for abortion care. Our Monthly Abortion Provision Study found that in 2023, over 34,000 Texans traveled out of state for care. Destiny Lopez, our Acting Co-CEO, said it best: "The anti-abortion movement would rather let pregnant people suffer life-threatening health consequences than allow them to receive stabilizing abortion care." Texans and abortion patients everywhere deserve better. SCOTUS must step up and affirm that EMTALA protects all pregnant people in emergency situations, no matter what. Today is International Safe Abortion Day, and we are taking this opportunity to honor Amber Thurman and Candi Miller, whose lives were both tragically cut short due to Georgia's restrictive abortion laws. Amber and Candi’s stories highlight the devastating impact of abortion restrictions and bans, particularly on the health and lives of Black women and other women of color, who are disproportionately harmed by these inhumane and dangerous policies. Abortion restrictions and bans deny pregnant people their human right to reproductive freedom, bodily autonomy, and endanger our health and safety. We can and must do better. #InternationalSafeAbortionDay #AmberThurman #CandiMiller #TrustBlackWomen #SayHerName #SafeAbortionDay #ReproductiveJustice #AbortionIsHealthcare #BansOffOurBodies
