🌍 Why Humanitarian Needs Are Set to Treble in the Next 5 Years Did you know that the world is facing an unprecedented rise in the number of people requiring humanitarian aid? 📈 People caught in global conflicts and climate change means we are looking at ❗ TREBLE ❗ the global need by 2030. This surge is driven by a complex mix of factors recorded in the IRC Emergency Watchlist (see below). While each Watchlist country has its own unique challenges, eight key factors help explain why humanitarian needs are expanding so rapidly and what we plan to do about it. 1. 🌱 Conflict and Climate are increasingly intersecting in 15 of the 20 IRC Watchlist countries, exacerbating the impact of both crises on already vulnerable people. 2. 🛡️ Weak governments allow non-state armed groups to gain power, sparking new conflicts, worsening existing ones, and driving up food insecurity and displacement. 3. 🚨 Global and regional powers are intensifying conflicts, often by supplying weapons rather than promoting peace. 4. 🔄 Violent and unconstitutional changes in leadership creates more government instability. 5. ⚠️ Increasing Disregard for International Humanitarian Law is exacerbating the impact of conflict on innocent people. 6. 🚫 Blocked Humanitarian Access and targeting of humanitarian aid workers. 7. 🌡️ Climate Inequity: Watchlist countries contribute only 1.7% of global carbon emissions yet bear a disproportionate burden of climate impacts. 8. 📉 Rising Public Debt: High levels of public debt are preventing some governments from investing in essential services and systems needed to mitigate and respond to crises. 💵 Addressing the Crisis💵 Cash is King: The Most Effective Lifeline in Crisis Alleviation. Global NGOs, alongside key funders like USAID, the UN, Global Governments and private sector giants like VISA, are stepping up to expand cash and voucher transfers—the fastest and most effective way to get help directly to those who need it most. Our team is growing! 🌟 It's a bitter sweet moment when you're at the stage of expanding what has been a small core team for 4 years. We have worked together on the short, sharp, iterative, hard work of connecting into the market and working on the best way to scale with the right global partners. We've spent the past 2 years working on moving Market Positioning from midsize NonProfit clients into Government clients and now connecting into global NGOs. The past 6 months has been gaining a clear insight into what it would take to scale into these bigger clients with a firm focus on our WHY - Solving problems for people in crisis and chronic poverty.
