How can we better integrate enterprise integrity into public procurement? This topic was front and center this week in Santo Domingo as Ethicist International Senior Advisor Sujata Dayal was invited by the Commercial Law Development Program to present and train on a new resource guide co-created with the Dominican Government (Dirección General de Contrataciones Publicas) to strengthen due diligence and risk management practices. We are proud to support so many leading stakeholders, spanning diverse sectors, around the world in realizing the benefits of today’s #ethicsera. Congratulations to the #DominicanRepublic on this milestone achievement – it could not be better timed as the country prepares to host the #SummitoftheAmericas in 2025! How can we empower more women to take on leadership roles in ethics? What barriers must be addressed to make this happen? This was the central question of last week’s 90-minute virtual session hosted by the Business Ethics for APEC SMEs Initiative, masterfully moderated by Chrisoula Nikidis. The session convened more than 50 diverse leaders each sharing their existing efforts and providing concrete recommendations for advancing conversations around women’s leadership in business ethics. Participants explored potential future outcomes for the Initiative aligning with APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s commitment to strengthen women's leadership and empowerment. The conversation prompted deep reflection on how stakeholders can actively empower more women to pursue leadership roles in ethics and how we can cultivate a culture of responsibility and integrity at the highest levels of organizations by implementing inclusive policies, providing mentorship, and ensuring equitable access to leadership opportunities. Thank you to Ángela Flores, Tere Cantú Reus, Sabrina, so kuen Chan, Connie Cote, Lindsey Smith, and Tricia Van Orden for contributing valuable insights on creating supportive environments for women. #WomensLeadership #BusinessEthics #CollectiveAction

We are at a pivotal moment in the evolution of business ethics strategies through collective action. In today's rapidly changing landscape, the nature of collective action itself is evolving significantly. Our Manager of Sector-Wide Initiatives, Lindsey Smith, MTS, recently attended the Basel Collective Action Conference and the International Anti-Corruption Conference in Vilnius, diving deep into discussions on advancing business ethics. The key takeaways emphasize the importance of strong leadership, a balanced approach to incentives, and leveraging networks to foster a culture of integrity and transparency. Congratulations and thanks to Transparency International and the Basel Institute on Governance for hosting these events, and to all our partners and colleagues for their invaluable insights. #Ethics #BusinessIntegrity #IACC2024
Paraphrasing Alison Taylor: We all agree business ethics is a good thing. Now what? I recently had the privilege of representing Ethicist International at the Basel Collective Action Conference and the International Anti-Corruption Conference in Vilnius. These events offered profound insights into enhancing our collective action and sector-wide strategies for business ethics. Reflecting on the discussions, the most impactful lessons emphasized rethinking collective action itself to advance business ethics. By incorporating behavioral science and movement-building strategies, we can move from mere commitments to tangible actions, fostering a culture of genuine ethical practices within our organizations. 1. Similarly paraphrasing Klaus Moosmayer: Leaders cannot solve the problem alone, but they *can* foster an environment that encourages transparent discussions. Maintaining a consistent, informed, and action-oriented tone at the top is essential. Industry leaders must translate their commitment to ethical practices into actionable steps by bringing these conversations to their boards. The experts I heard from recommended reframing decisions as ethical imperatives rather than mere business choices. 2. The debate over using "carrots" versus "sticks" to ensure compliance remains unresolved. This is largely because a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective; the success of each method depends on the specific context of the company. Harmonizing principles while considering factors like company size, location, and compliance history is crucial. While sanctions are well-understood and institutionalized, transitioning to a culture that rewards ethical actions can be transformative in the long run. 3. We follow not only leaders but also our peers. By leveraging the power of networks, we can create environments that deter unethical behavior and promote collective integrity. Just as authoritarian regimes collaborate efficiently, anti-corruption advocates must foster the same level of effective collaboration within their networks. Congratulations and thank you to Transparency International and the Basel Institute on Governance for hosting these events. Special thanks to Ethicist’s friends, colleagues, and partners working tirelessly across anti-corruption and business ethics-related spaces for sharing your invaluable insights, including (in addition to those above) Aleksej Daineko, Noah Arshinoff, UNODC, OECD - OCDE, Maritime Anti-Corruption Network, African Development Bank Group, and many others. #Ethics #BusinessEthics #BusinessIntegrity #IACC2024

How can leading organizations build trust as our world enters a new era of ethical decision-making and transparency? Why do few leaders find themselves sufficiently prepared? What constitutes a strong ethical culture and why does this matter to your stakeholders? Ethicist International CEO Andrew Blasi was privileged to shed light on these and other questions during the opening morning of this week’s Federation of Tax Administrators 2024 Annual Meeting in Long Beach, California. Before a packed audience of nearly 400 representatives from nearly every U.S. state (plus federal and several municipal/international) tax authority and many private sector representatives, Andrew offered practical guidance into what attendees can do to meet the evolving expectations of their unique stakeholders. Thank you Sharonne Bonardi, Esq., JD, MBA and Ryan Minnick for this special invitation and to your members for their dynamic engagement. We look forward to deepening our collaboration! #Ethics #Leadership #Culture
