David Bowie was famous for his unique creativity and artistic vision that was far beyond his era. His stage presence was not only defined by his striking makeup and exceptional musical talent, but also by his captivating, almost haunting eyes: one piercing blue, the other a mysterious black. In a moment of intense emotion, Bowie was reportedly punched in the left eye, leading to a fingernail scratching his eyeball. This caused the muscles controlling the iris to become paralyzed. Consequently, Bowie's left pupil remained permanently dilated, resulting in his distinctive blue and black eyes. Bowie's eyes would have definitely made TBI testing more challenging, but luckily anisocoria is a pretty uncommon condition that can be quickly spotted during the first check-up and we, at Ethos, are trained to know the difference. Back in September 1967, Sweden made a bold move that left everyone astonished - they switched their driving from the left side of the road to the right. This decision was met with a wave of public outcry, but the rationale behind it was quite intriguing. The valid concerns raised by the Swedish population proved to be true as traffic jams multiplied with perplexed drivers grappling to acclimate to the unfamiliar conditions. Now, imagine the brain having its own traffic jams, just like the ones we encounter on the roads. Well, it turns out that these brain traffic jams can actually be visualized using a type of MRI called Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). By measuring the movement of fluid in the brain, particularly the water produced during normal neuronal metabolism, DTI provides us with a unique "road map" of the brain. Despite humans' artistic abilities, nature's designs never cease to impress us! The stunning "tree of life" in New South Wales, Australia, captured in the drone image above, showcases the intricate beauty created by tea tree oil seeping into the lake's drainage channels. It's truly a masterpiece crafted by Mother Nature herself. The distinct look of this place is due to the tea tree oil seeping from the trees by the river into the channels that have formed in the lake over time. Interestingly, this view also bears a striking resemblance to the cerebellum, often referred to as the "brain within the brain," located at the skull's base. It plays a crucial role in functions like balance, motor coordination, and movement. We, at Ethos, also play a crucial role in all those functions by helping the cerebellum and every other part of the brain recover from TBI through our testing and our rehabs. Fun fact: Approximately 4 to 14% of people experience a terrible taste in their mouth when they consume cilantro. Some say it tastes like soap, while others go as far as comparing it to dead bugs! This unique reaction is caused by a genetic difference in their olfactory receptors, making them highly sensitive to the soapy aldehydes in cilantro leaves. In the realm of diagnostic brain testing, a fascinating phenomenon emerges when we examine the images. Without any context, deciphering the true nature of what we're observing becomes quite challenging. Is it a normal finding, a minor abnormality, or a glaring abnormality? It's akin to gazing at a snapshot of Giannis Antetokounmpo's hands without a point of reference, such as an average person's hand. Sure, they appear large, but the true magnitude remains elusive without a standard-sized hand for comparison. That's why we, at Ethos, provide normal images as an appendix for all our oculomotor testing and videonystagmography (VNG) tests. This makes comparing results much simpler and more effective.
