European Patients' Academy on Therapeutic Innovation

About us

The European Patients’ Academy on Therapeutic Innovation (EUPATI) provides education and training for patients and patient representatives on the process of medicines research and development (R&D). The trained patient experts are key to realising meaningful patient engagement in medicines R&D, regulatory deliberations and other activities. EUPATI was established by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) in 2012, and was hosted by the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) as a Public-Private Partnership Programme 2017-2020. EUPATI is today established as an independent non-profit Foundation in the Netherlands and has 24 National Platforms in Europe and in Japan. “We focus on education and training to increase the capacity and capability of patients to be valuable contributors to medicines research and development by working with patients and the stakeholders they collaborate with.”

Reflections from our EUPATI learners at the AGM 🎓 During our Annual General Meeting, Mitchell Silva, PhD and Sarah Davies shared their own journeys with EUPATI, emphasising the impact of structured patient training and involvement in healthcare innovation. 💡 💬 Mitchell, a EUPATI Fellow and Coordinator of EUPATI Belgium, reflected on the importance of structure in patient engagement: "Everyone speaks about patient engagement and empowerment, but it remains such an abstract term. Somehow by having a structure, you see that this is a science... and it's actually very nice to see that for example, more and more faculties are having PhDs on these topics. We really can change something and we can innovate by pulling in the patient voice and methods to do so, because there's a methodology to that as well. " He also highlighted how collaboration across sectors drives this progress even further. 💬 Sarah, Patient Engagement Director at Lumanity, talked about the value of EUPATI training: "The training gave you that structure, so you're learning and taking some very practical tools from it that you can use... and this gives us all some consistency in approach." She also emphasised the importance of learning from real-world examples: "If we're able to build up readily available case studies and examples of best practice, that also really helps us to take those learnings and share them more widely." Both speakers agreed on the need for more interactive learning and practical use cases that can be widely shared within the community. They also discussed expanding EUPATI’s work into education for students and professionals. Mitchell added, "I really hope that this work that we're doing with the Erasmus+ project could be a nice basis and template that we can adopt and distribute, so we directly make sure that everyone in education gets the possibilities and opportunities by working with patients." ✨ This session truly showcased how EUPATI training empowered patients to drive innovation in healthcare and build bridges across sectors! 🌍💡 Thank you again to Mitchell and Sarah for kickstarting the day with these reflections! #PatientEngagement #HealthcareInnovation #EUPATI #PatientAdvocacy #AGMRecap #EUPATIAGM2024

🚀 Exciting discussions at the European Commission for the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) workshop this week, where EUPATI joined the conversation on real-world data, digital health, and AI! 🌐💡 A variety of ongoing and recent IMI/IHI projects were presented, among them COMBINE-CT where EUPATI is partnering in the exploration AI-powered treatment pathways for cardiology care (with Robert Hofsink in the lead).   While these types of innovative developments represent a significant promise for improving patient outcomes, we also have to make sure that challenges related to data privacy, access and trust are addressed alongside further investment in digital health literacy. 📚 Patients have a key role to play in this area, their unmet needs guiding the development, and patient feedback improving design and functionality of the different solutions. 🎯 Thank you to Gozde Susuzlu Briggs (European Patients' Forum), Denis C. (WECAN) and Gulcin Gumus (EURORDIS-Rare Diseases Europe) for representing a strong patient voice. Great news from EUPATI & University College Dublin 📢 🙌 We're excited to announce that University College Dublin (UCD) doctoral students now have access to EUPATI’s training modules as part of a pilot scheme, further solidifying our ongoing partnership! Starting today, 1 October, and in line with Ireland’s PPI Ignite Network @ UCD (Patient & Public Involvement), UCD will sponsor their doctoral students to take our patient and public involvement courses—covering key areas like digital health, clinical development, and medical devices. 🎓💊 By offering these resources, UCD is leading the way in preparing future researchers to prioritise patient engagement and collaboration in healthcare innovation. This initiative shows how academic institutions can support students with the tools and knowledge to drive patient-centered research. A big thank you to Emma Dorris, Laia Bisbal Arnal, Maria Dutarte and David Jennings for coordinating this initiative! 🎉 Day 1 recap: EUPATI Annual General Meeting 2024! 🎉 Yesterday, we gathered for an exciting Day 1 of #EUPATIAGM2024, where our incredible community of Partners, National Platforms, Fellows, and more, came together in Brussels to explore the future of patient engagement and education in healthcare. 🌍💡 We kicked off with Cristin Lind (EUPATI Sweden) and Maria Dutarte moderating a forward-looking session on EUPATI’s vision for the future. Inspiring opening remarks from Jytte Lyngvig (Trustee) and Anders Olauson (EUPATI Chairman) set the tone, while Juan Garcia Burgos (European Medicines Agency) welcomed participants with an emphasis on the growing role of patients in healthcare decisions. We heard powerful personal stories from Mitchell Silva, PhD (EUPATI Belgium) and Sarah Davies (Lumanity/EUPATI Learning Lab Alumni), who shared how EUPATI training has transformed their advocacy journeys. A multistakeholder panel brought together experts like Mandy Daly (INHA), Kaisa Immonen (EMA), Emma Dorris (UCD), Niklas Blomberg (IHI), and Magda Chlebus (EFPIA) to discuss how EUPATI can continue evolving in today’s complex healthcare landscape. The afternoon explored global perspectives on patient involvement, led by Rebecca Mbewe (EUPATI Fellow). We zoomed out to consider the broader impact of patient advocacy globally, with insights from Claudia Egher (Utrecht University), followed by a roundtable featuring voices from across the world: Ivo Schauwecker (EUPATI Switzerland), Linda Hunter (CanTrain, Canada), Dani Mothci (IAPO), and Alexandra Heumber Perry (Rare Diseases International). Collaborative patient advocacy was also discussed, moderated by Amelia Hursey (Parkinsons Europe). Experts like Jan Geissler (Patvocates/WECAN Academy), Stefan Gijssels (Patient Expert Center, Belgium), and Alice Larotonda, Ph.D. (SMA Europe) explored how patient education can lead to stronger advocacy efforts. The final session, moderated by Inês Alves (EUPATI Fellow & EUPATI Portugal), discussed patient involvement as a profession. Key voices such as Ingrid Klingmann (European Forum for Good Clinical Practice), Anders Blaedel Lassen (Lundbeck), Peter-Bram 't Hoen (Radboud University Medical Center), and Lenka Součková (European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network) shared insights on how training programs are driving organisational change. Anja Hoffmann (Bayer) officially launched the Learning Lab alumni network, marking a milestone for industry and academia graduates! The day concluded with reflections and closing remarks by Anders Olauson and Kay Warner (EUPATI Board Co-Chair), followed by a lively afterwork reception. We are thankful, in moments like these, to see how much positive impact we can create as a strong network 💪✨ #PatientInvolvement #PatientAdvocacy
