🌐 Highlights from #DigitalGipfel 2024 in Frankfurt This year’s "Digital Gipfel" saw Germany's leaders sharing ambitious visions for the nation’s digital future: 🇩🇪 Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz underscored the principle of "sovereignty" with a clear vision: "My goal is to shape digital transformation so it aligns with our values." For Germany, a digital evolution must reflect and preserve the country's foundational principles. 🇩🇪 Robert Habeck, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, challenged the traditional principle of "data minimisation," considering it outdated. His call for gathering as much (anonymized) data as possible signals a significant shift, noting that the current approach to data privacy needs rethinking to advance digital innovation. 🇩🇪 Volker Wissing, Federal Minister of Digital and Transport, asked the critical question, "How much regulation do we really need?" With "Digital Only" as the proposed next step in Germany's federal digital strategy, Wissing highlighted the inefficiency of analog processes, which, beyond the high costs, lack the data insights essential for innovation. These visions resonate strongly with our data space research project ecosystem surrounding EuProGigant Ecosystem! Gerald Ristow from Software AG showcased the #EuProGigant demonstrator “Component matching,” a key part of this German-Austrian research project. #EuProGigant demonstrates how smart use of production data can drive industrial efficiency by connecting to Gaia-X, the European data infrastructure, ensuring secure and sovereign data use that strengthens European manufacturing industry. Florian Mitschke from Institut für Produktionsmanagement, Technologie und Werkzeugmaschinen - PTW explained with the #DIONE-X Demonstrator how data can be exchanged on marketplaces like Pontus-X from deltaDAO AG, based on Gaia-X regulations, and how this can pinpoint the ideal time for a tool change, minimising machine downtimes, cutting unnecessary costs and optimising resources with remarkable precision. It was a great opportunity to connect with a broad audience not only out of the political spectrum but also from the industry and other research projects! Thank you to Gerald Ristow, who organised the booth of Software AG with our research projects! Workshop Rewind – Asset Administration Shell✨ Our recent EuProGigant workshop explored Asset Administration Shells (AAS) by offering professionals and participants with hands-on insights into this crucial technology. Hosted in collaboration with the IFT - Institut für Fertigungstechnik und Photonische Technologien, the Institut für Produktionsmanagement, Technologie und Werkzeugmaschinen - PTW and Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, the workshop delivered valuable learnings across three focused tracks. Here’s what was discussed: ⭐ Track 1: Application Fields Led by Lorenz Fink and Bernhard Wallner, this track explored where the AAS can be most effectively applied (Type I, II, III). Key takeaway: many businesses still need support in understanding and implementing AAS. As Lorenz put it, “There is no visible pull-effect yet – not everyone is ready to adopt AAS.” ⭐ Track 2: Submodels Rainer Gerstbauer and Levon Harutyunyan guided the participants through 8 key submodels, including IDTA and eClass. A challenge identified was the need for standardisation, as some submodels are overly specific while others are too broad. Balancing specificity and coverage remain a key task and problem area. ⭐ Track 3: Implementation Tools & Libraries Viktor Berchtenbreiter and Fabian Z. gave participants an opportunity to program an AAS, including implementing it on a Behringer saw. Their conclusion: the current documentation for open-source tools like Fraunhofer’s FA³ST and BaSyx Java V2 is insufficient, highlighting a strong need for enhanced support to help companies develop their own AAS solutions. The workshop brought forward key insights and challenges, stressing the importance of improved documentation, standardisation, and support for broader adoption of AAS technology. Thank you to all our participants and speakers for an engaging and insightful session! We look forward to further pushing the boundaries of data and service networks in manufacturing.
