🔥Did you know the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games torch is made from 100% recycled steel scrap? Now, that’s a winner! ArcelorMittal France has created 2,000 of these torches to be carried by 10,000 torchbearers on their route to the Games in late July. And today, the torch relay is in #Strasbourg, home of the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights and the European Parliament – and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate Europe’s competitiveness than with this symbol of green industry and its potential. The European Steel Association (EUROFER)’s Director General Axel Eggert tells us more – watch below 👇 #StrongerWithEUSteel #Paris2024

📢 The European Parliament will discuss the #steel crisis in its plenary meeting next week in Strasbourg 👨🏭 🏭 🇪🇺 ⚠️ What is at stake? Europe's prosperity, resilience and quality jobs! Why does steel matter so much? 🏡 Steel is everywhere in our daily life. From the buildings we live in to our means of transport, from our hospitals to how we prepare our food, and even in the sports we play, the art we admire, and the music we enjoy. 🇪🇺 Steel is at the core of the European Union, started with the visionary project of Robert Schuman in 1950 which has ensured over 70 years of peace and prosperity to all European citizens. 👷♂️ European steel has been a constant driver of growth. For each job in steel, other 9 are created elsewhere. Today, the European steel industry adds €152 billion to the EU's economy and generates 2.6 million EU quality jobs. #StrongerWithEUSteel 🔎 More details on the EP plenary debate below 👇 https://lnkd.in/eTiRPMbB

✉ SAVE THE EUROPEAN STEEL INDUSTRY & ITS JOBS! Ahead of tomorrow's Council of the European Union meeting, the CEOs representing the European steel industry have addressed a letter to the Heads of State and Government asking for urgent action. The situation of our industry is extremely dire: 🚨Global steel excess capacity reached 551 million tonnes in 2023 = four times the EU annual steel production. According to the OECD - OCDE, additional 157 million tonnes of capacity are expected by 2026. 🚨Steel production in the EU has been shrinking by 30% since 2008 to 126 million tonnes in 2023. 🚨Restructuring and capacity reduction processes have led to a loss of almost 100,000 jobs in the last 15 years. 🚨Capacity utilisation has dropped to the lowest, unviable levels of around 60%. A Steel Action Plan as part of the Clean Industrial Deal must include both emergency measures and a structural solution to the disastrous impact of global overcapacity and unfair trade on the EU steel market, putting jobs and the clean transition at risk. We ask #EUCO leaders to support as a matter of urgency: 🌐 Assertive enforcement of Trade Defence Instruments & a structural solution to worsening global steel excess capacity. 🌱 A waterproof #CBAM, preventing circumvention and delocalisation of downstream sectors, while preserving EU steel exports’ #competitiveness. ⚡ Affordable clean energy for energy intensive industries exposed to global competition. 💎 Secure access to raw materials while retaining #steel scrap within the EU. 📈 Lead markets to drive demand for #greensteel made in Europe. As the #EU Energy Council convenes today to discuss the #energy sector's role in boosting the EU's competitiveness, it's clear that keeping #steelmaking in Europe benefits both the environment and our economic strength 💶. Why? #GreenSteel made in Europe powers the production of affordable hydrogen & clean electricity, which in turn powers the production of green steel. 🔄 This circular relationship ensures that European-made green steel is a key player in the #GreenTransition, while keeping Europe competitive with advanced technology and sustainable production. It's a win-win for Europe's future. 🔗 StrongerWithEUSteel.eu #StrongerWithEUSteel

⚠️Steel global excess capacity will not resolve itself. The time to act is now!⚠️ At the last Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity (GFSEC) Ministerial Meeting, new projections show global steel overcapacity to reach 𝟲𝟯𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲—𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨’𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. This surge in overcapacity continues to distort the global steel market, threatening thousands of jobs across Europe and beyond. 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 are needed by GFSEC countries to counter this destructive trend. While we support the principles put forward by the GFSEC, we note that a vast number of countries has already imposed tariffs on steel imports. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 that includes: 🚨 Emergency actions to contain the spillover effects global steel excess capacity 🌐 Structural solution to address the root causes of global steel excess capacity Steel is not only the backbone of employment and innovation—it plays a key role in cleantech and the green transition. Persisting on allowing massive quantities of cheap, carbon-intensive steel undermines both our competitiveness and decarbonisation efforts. Read the full press release here👉 https://lnkd.in/duM5vDwW
