In the latest edition of the Europlanet Magazine, Nigel Mason, Coordinator of Europlanet 2024 RI, offers valuable insights on building relationships with embassies to foster scientific collaborations. Whether you're developing an international research partnership or moving abroad for work, embassies can be a critical resource for building connections and facilitating support. 🔍 Why Engage with Embassies? Information Gathering: Embassies monitor scientific advances and report back to their home country. Building Networks: They can facilitate contact between scientists and research institutions across borders. Showcasing Innovation: Embassies often host events to promote their nation's scientific achievements. Support for Official Visits: They organise and facilitate visits of government officials and research leaders. Advisory Roles: Embassy staff increasingly provide scientific advice to their foreign service colleagues, particularly on global issues like climate change and cybersecurity. Embassies aren’t just places for passports and visas—they are powerful allies in scientific diplomacy. Establishing connections with embassy staff can open doors to exciting opportunities for your research and career. 📖 Read the full article in the latest Europlanet Magazine: https://lnkd.in/evsmzBiF #Europlanet #ScientificCollaboration #InternationalRelations #SpaceResearch #UKHungary #EuroplanetMagazine

At EPSC 2024 in Berlin, Prof. Ravit Helled from the University of Zurich was awarded the prestigious Paolo Farinella Prize for her groundbreaking research on ‘the internal structure of planetary bodies: clues on formation processes of the Solar System’. Her work on the composition and "dilute cores" of giant planets has helped our understanding of planets both inside and outside our Solar System. You can learn more about her research and award here: https://lnkd.in/e3ERizMv The Farinella Prize, established in memory of scientist Paolo Farinella, celebrates excellence in planetary science, focusing on a different research area each year. Prof. Helled's achievements join the legacy of past winners who have made significant contributions to our understanding of the cosmos. #EPSC2024

In September, I had the opportunity to present the beginnings of my PhD project at #EPSC2024 in Berlin. The project, titled “The Creation of a Radiometric Correction Module in Python for Chandrayaan-2 Lunar DFSAR Imagery” is aimed at introducing the planetary science community to the ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization’s Chandrayaan-2 dataset for Lunar pole observation. In particular, highlighting the L-band dataset for its ability to penetrate up to 5m into the Lunar Regolith. The code I am currently developing is aiming to be part of a wider toolkit that mirrors the European Space Agency - ESA’s SNAP, but for planetary datasets instead. I am hoping to soon release my code on GitHub for wider use, and I am currently nearing the final stages of development for it! Its exciting to see how this has evolved over the past year, and I have planned more features to be added for analytical purposes, such as Polarimetry. It was wonderful to meet both new people and catch up with friends in Berlin, and I even managed a visit to the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin which has to be one of my new favourite museums. Bring on EPSC 2025 in Helsinki! A big thank you to the Europlanet Society and the Department of Earth Sciences, Royal Holloway University of London for bursary support which allowed me to attend.

For anyone who missed it, at #EPSC2024 in Berlin research presented by Dr. Bart Root (Delft University of Technology) revealed dense structures hidden beneath the northern polar plains of Mars, possibly remnants of ancient volcanic activity or impacts. The study suggests that active processes in the mantle of Mars could be shifting Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the Solar System. These findings were made using gravity data from multiple missions, including new insights from NASA’s InSight mission. 🌌 Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Europlanet Science Congress 2024 (EPSC) in Berlin. I presented my research on Apollo 16 sample and lunar meteorites, conducted at the Planetary Spectroscopy Laboratory, DLR. Additionally, I had the honor of chairing a session on Imagery, Photometry, and Spectroscopy of Airless Bodies. Both my EPSC visit and research visit at PSL were generously funded by Europlanet 2024 RI. Europlanet Society #EPSC2024

Did you know Europlanet supports the Geology & Planetary Mapping Winter School, producing planetary geological maps of a range of Solar System bodies? Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eQ-VN_bm
Thrilled to Share an Exciting Milestone! 🎉🎉 I am proud to have successfully completed the #GMAPWinterSchool2024, where I had the incredible opportunity to expand my skills in planetary mapping across several fascinating celestial bodies! 🌍🌑🪐 During this program, I developed #detailed_geological_maps of: 🌎#Venus: Conducted geological and structural mapping of the #MertsegerMons area in the #HelenPlaniaQuadrangle, and created a map of Venus' emissivity anomalies using #VIRTIS_data in the 1.02 μm spectral window. 🌎#Ganymede: Utilized U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) #Voyager and #Galileo global mosaics for geological and structural mapping of the area including the northern portion of the dark terrain #MariusRegio and the light terrain #Nippur, #Mashu, #Anshar, and #Philus_sulci, located between 180° and 150°E. 🌎#Vesta: Created a #LAMO-based detailed geological map of #Calpurnia_crater, part of the iconic #snowman_feature in the Av-8 #Marcia_quadrangle. This hands-on experience has been incredibly rewarding and has allowed me to deepen my expertise in planetary geology. A huge thank you to the #GMAP team and my fellow participants for this fantastic journey. I look forward to applying these skills to future research in #planetary_exploration! #PlanetaryMapping #GMAPWinterSchool2024 Europlanet Society #Venus #Ganymede #Vesta #GeologicalMapping #GMAPWinterSchool #SpaceExploration #CalpurniaCrater #MertsegerMons #MariusRegio

Who knew mountains "respire"?! Check out some exciting research which shows they do! Supported by the Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure. European Commission
Did you know that mountains "respire" CO2? This spring, the result of my 3-year postdoctoral research with the Helmholtz-Centre Potsdam - German Research Centre GFZ was published as an article in Nature Geoscience #NatureGeosci. In this work, I calculated the #CO2budget of the Central Apennine Mountains (Central Italy) and found that they are net emitters of CO2 from a deep source in the crust/mantle of the Earth. In turn, the formation and release of this CO2 reflects the history and evolution of the tectonic plates that formed the mountain range in the first place! Thanks to the Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF and Europlanet Society for funding this amazing project! #CO2Modeling #DataScience #FieldResearch #Geochemistry #Geodynamics #GIS Check out the research briefing or full article to read more.
