About us

For over 80 years the Exeter Historical Society has been collecting artifacts from Exeter’s past ... and its present. Our collections illustrate the town’s rich and fascinating history, its residents, and ultimately its place in the larger history of both the state and the nation. A non-profit organization, the Exeter Historical Society offers regular programs of local historical interest and is a repository for documents, maps, photos, artifacts, and other ephemera pertaining to Exeter, New Hampshire. We maintain a research library, act as a resource for genealogical research, co-sponsor historical events and publications, create exhibits hoping to encourage historic preservation, and document today’s events as the history of tomorrow. Our curator, Barbara Rimkunas, is the author of the bi-weekly column "Historically Speaking" which appears in the Exeter News-Letter and on our blog. We produce the monthly video series, The Exeter History Minute, which can be found on YouTube and Vimeo, under the name ExeterHistory. We are also home to History Bat.

Updates

  • Did you know that there was a time—and another time, and a time after that—when Exeter was part of Massachusetts? We're not even kidding. In this episode, Barbara gives the "CliffsNotes" version of how parts of New Hampshire were actually in Massachusetts for periods of the 17th century. This Exeter History Minute is made possible by a grant from the Dan Brown Charitable Fund.   We would like to credit the Library of Congress for the map of the Province of New Hampshire and the Digital Maine Repository for the Pascatway River in New England map. https://lnkd.in/eNdDW3NC

  • We hear more and more often that the United States is becoming a cash-less society—many of us rarely use cash and instead rely on credit cards and digital wallets. In this episode, Barbara explores how Exeter was largely a cash-less society in the 17th and 18th centuries, but in a very different way. This Exeter History Minute is made possible by a grant from the Dan Brown Charitable Fund.   We would like to credit Andreas Steidlinger for the lumber photo and Shawaz Malik for the photo of fish in a bowl.
