About us

Explore Schools is a network of public charter schools providing nearly 2,000 students in Brooklyn with the outstanding education they deserve. We strive to provide students with the academic skills and critical-thinking abilities they need to succeed in a college-preparatory high school and beyond. As an organization, we acknowledge the detrimental impact of racism and systems of oppression. We envision a pathway to equity that features excellent curriculum and instruction in response to the opportunity gap—providing our scholars with access and opportunities to succeed. We commit to reflect individually on the roles we play within systems of oppression; and we channel our individual talents and cultural sensitivity to help our scholars and local community thrive. We believe that all children can learn when immersed in a rich environment full of high expectations, rigorous academics, and caring, committed adults. We believe equity and excellence are not mutually exclusive—we can meet the needs of all students in our schools, while actively engaging parents and driving toward excellent academic results. We believe it is both our privilege and responsibility to help close the opportunity gap in the Brooklyn community. We are saddened to hear about the passing of Lola Adedokun. Lola’s passion and commitment to equity were matched by her intellect and thoughtfulness. Lola served on Explore Charter Schools’ Board of Trustees from 2020 to 2022, where she served in a leadership capacity as Vice Chairperson. Lola’s actions consistently showed her deep belief in ensuring all students have access to the outstanding public education they deserved. Our thoughts are with all those whose lives she touched.

It is with immense sorrow that the Aspen Institute mourns the passing of Lola Adedokun. Lola was the Executive Director of the Aspen Global Innovators Group and co-chair of the Aspen Institute Forum on Women and Girls, a well-respected colleague, a teacher, a daughter, a sister, a proud auntie, and a dear friend. Lola’s career with the Aspen Institute emphasized the importance of global health and development through innovative, community-led solutions. In her role leading the Aspen Global Innovators Group, she equipped diverse leaders with the tools to drive meaningful change and lasting impact. She also lifted up promising change-makers in the US and beyond as the co-chair of the Aspen Forum on Women and Girls. She was a committed champion for overlooked communities everywhere, believing that amplifying these voices was not just a priority but a responsibility. Before her work at the Aspen Institute, Lola spent 14 years with the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, where she administered more than $150 million in grant-making as both Director of the African Health Initiative and Director of the Child Well-being Program. “We will always remember Lola for her dynamic presence and leadership. Her commitment to equitable health and prosperity was both global and domestic and she was a tireless champion for the needs of all. We will miss her care, her drive to make the world better through her work, and her friendship,” said Aspen Institute President and CEO Dan Porterfield. Known for her deep compassion, sense of humor, and commitment to justice and opportunity, Lola was an indispensable member of the Aspen Institute community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lola’s loved ones in this time of sadness.
