The Flatiron Building, c. 1902 The Flatiron Building, one of New York City’s most recognizable structures, has a fascinating history that began with its completion in 1902. Designed by architect Daniel Burnham and developed by George A. Fuller, the building was originally named the "Fuller Building." Its distinctive triangular shape was a creative solution to the challenging lot configuration at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway. Standing at 285 feet tall and consisting of 22 stories, the Flatiron’s innovative design was groundbreaking for its time. It was one of the first skyscrapers in New York City, reflecting the architectural style of the Beaux-Arts movement and utilizing a steel frame for its construction. Originally, the building housed various offices, including those for newspapers, insurance companies, and other businesses, becoming a vibrant hub in the early 20th century. Despite its initial success, the Flatiron faced challenges as the decades went on. By the 1950s, the building’s appeal declined, and it was threatened with demolition as urban renewal projects reshaped the city. However, a grassroots preservation campaign gained traction, and in 1966, it was designated a New York City Landmark. This designation played a crucial role in protecting the building’s historic character and architectural significance. In the years that followed, the Flatiron underwent a series of restorations, including a major refurbishment in the late 1990s that modernized its interiors while preserving its iconic exterior. The restoration emphasized the original terra cotta façade, which features intricate detailing, and improved the building's infrastructure to meet contemporary standards. Today, EWBC is proud to contribute to the ongoing renovations at the Flatiron Building, where select units are currently being converted into luxury apartments. Our team is providing essential temporary protection measures to ensure the safety and smooth progress of the project. This includes elevator shaft protection as the old shafts are demolished and new locations for the elevators are installed, temporary ramps, platforms, and steps to accommodate elevation changes, and perimeter roof protection to safeguard workers and the site. Additionally, we are supplying temporary bathrooms and hole covers to ensure safe working conditions, as well as finish protection to shield the finished products in the new apartments once installed. These services are vital in preserving the integrity of the project while protecting both workers and the finished product. Looking to the future, the Flatiron Building continues to be a symbol of innovation and resilience. As New York City embraces its rich architectural heritage, ongoing preservation efforts will ensure that this iconic landmark remains a cherished part of the skyline for generations to come. Here’s to the enduring legacy of the Flatiron Building! ✨ #ProtectedByEWBC #FlatironBuilding #NYC #EWBC

Check out some before-and-after photos of our work for Northwell Health on the façade of Syosset Hospital. As part of a larger, ongoing renovation, our team was first tasked with the demolition of the glass block wall seen in the first picture. The crew then installed temporary covers to keep the building and its occupants safe before returning to install DensGlass sheathing, lay the bricks & complete the renovation with a paint job to match the rest of the existing exterior. We’d like to extend our sincere gratitude to Hunter Roberts Construction Group for the opportunity to help keep Northwell Health’s Syosset Hospital operations running smoothly. #EWBC #Construction #Renovation #Facade #Demo #ExteriorWall #ProjectManagement #SafetyFirst #Northwell #Hospital
