Using innovative, data-driven solutions, and cutting-edge technology to optimise our renewable energy assets is central to our ways of working at Exus Renewables. Today, we’re excited to share thoughts from Antonio Girela Fernández, our Data & AI Manager based in Madrid. Antonio brings deep technical expertise that fuels our mission to improve efficiency and sustainability in the renewable energy sector. We spoke to him about his role, background, and the critical impact of data and AI in shaping the future of renewable energy: 1. Tell us about your role and how it contributes to the company's mission in renewable energy? My role is to ensure that data is at the core of our decision-making processes. I oversee how data is captured, managed, analysed, and leveraged to optimise the performance of our solar, wind, and BESS assets, and to drive greater efficiency and innovation at every level of the organisation. This enables us to make data-driven decisions across the entire company, ensuring we stay at the forefront of innovation in the renewable energy sector. 2. How has your background influenced your approach to data and AI in the renewable energy sector? From the beginning, I've been passionate about how new technologies are changing the way we work, enabling us to optimise assets and improve business processes. Initially, I was more focused on analysing the performance of our assets, which allowed me to see the importance of data. In my opinion, data-driven insights and AI could significantly improve areas such as corporate decision-making, predictive maintenance, energy optimisation, and asset performance. 3. What are some of the most exciting developments in AI and data analytics that you're currently exploring at Exus? We're excited about AI's potential for predictive maintenance and real-time asset optimisation. We're working with a leading AI company that specialises in preventive maintenance, using machine learning to analyse sensor data and predict equipment failures before they happen. This reduces downtime, extends asset life, and increases energy output. 4. Looking ahead, what do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges for AI and data analytics in the renewable energy industry, and how is Exus preparing to lead in this space? AI and data analytics offer significant opportunities to optimise energy generation and management at both micro and macro levels, helping us to adapt to different markets, optimise processes and improve energy storage management and predictive maintenance. In addition, data security and ethical challenges are increasing as we manage larger volumes of sensitive information. At Exus, we are addressing these challenges with strong cybersecurity measures, advanced data management and a culture of innovation to remain a leading AI-driven renewable energy company.
