Eye & Ear Foundation of Pittsburgh

Inspired by Dr. Peter Santa Maria's work and the significant number of children affected by ear infections, like otitis media, American philanthropist Greg Carr invited a small delegation from the Department and the Eye & Ear Foundation to join him at the Carr Foundation. This summer, he was featured on 60 Minutes to discuss his initiatives in restoring biodiversity Gorongosa National Park and aiding local communities in their recovery from years of civil war.

Last week, the UPMC Vision Institute hosted the 2024 Louis J. Fox Center for Vision Restoration Conference. This event united prominent figures in axon regeneration, inflammation and immune responses, as well as aging's impact on regeneration. The primary goal was to identify key obstacles hindering progress in these areas of research. THRIVE Grant Winner: Jessica H. Maxwell, MD, MPH, FACS Dr. Maxwell has been awarded a significant $50,000 grant from the Office of Rural Health, focusing on Telehealth Research and Innovation for Veterans with Cancer (THRIVE). This funding is aimed at overcoming challenges such as geographic distance and rural living conditions faced by patients with head and neck cancer. What brought us to Africa? Our objective is to integrate the hearing and otitis media project into a broader initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare across the region. With support from the Carr Foundation, Gorongosa, and potentially collaborating with Pitt, we aspire to make a meaningful impact.
