A Tapestry of a Well-Lived Life Below is a recent email I sent out to the FabNewport mailing list that received feedback in regards to the question, “What do you think of the ingredients that go into the tapestry of a well-lived life?” During my vacation I had the pleasure of spending an evening with a college buddy who now coaches organizations on how to improve their culture and his wife is a German psychiatrist. Our dinner conversation drifted to what it means to live a well-lived life? We explored the metaphor of life as a tapestry, woven from various ingredients that contribute to a sense of fulfillment and well-being. Although everyone’s recipe for a well-lived life is different, we created a list—a sort of roadmap for what we believe are the essential components of a life well-lived. Central to our discussion was the idea that having a positive vision for the future is not just one of the ingredients, but rather the very heart of them all. This forward-looking perspective acts as a guiding light, helping us navigate the complexities and challenges that life inevitably throws our way. It’s the thread that ties all the other elements together, giving them direction and purpose. Here’s the list we came up with: -Positive Future Vision - At the core of it all, a positive future vision provides direction and hope. It’s the belief that tomorrow can be better than today, and it motivates us to work toward that better future. This vision helps to anchor us during challenging times and propels us forward in pursuit of a well-lived life. -Meaningful Relationships - Connection with others is essential. Whether through family, friends, or community, these bonds provide support, joy, and a sense of belonging. -Purpose and Passion - Engaging in work or activities that ignite passion and give a sense of purpose. This could be in a career, a hobby, or a cause that feels deeply meaningful. -Health and Well-being - Physical and mental health are foundational. They encompass exercise, a balanced diet, and mental health practices such as mindfulness, meditation or therapy. -Growth and Learning - Continuously seeking to grow and learn, whether through formal education, self-study, or life experiences. -Gratitude and Mindfulness - Cultivating an attitude of gratitude and practicing mindfulness helps to stay grounded in the present and appreciate life’s small moments. -Resilience and Adaptability - Life is unpredictable, and resilience allows us to bounce back from setbacks, while adaptability helps us navigate change with grace. -Creativity and Play - Allowing space for creativity and play brings joy and innovation, helping to break up the monotony of daily routines. -Contribution and Service - Giving back to others or contributing to a cause larger than oneself fosters a sense of connection and purpose. -Skills and Competencies - what are you bringing to the table? Is there something else that should be added?
