Did you know that the UIC Cleft Team was established in 1949 by Dr. Sam Pruzansky? Dr. Pruzansky was an internationally renowned research scholar, clinician and teacher who served as Acting Chief of the Clinical Investigations Branch of the National Institute of Dental Research from 1953 to 1955. In 1959, under the Institute’s auspices, he chaired the Gatlinburg Conference, the definitive meeting on craniofacial anomalies. During the course of his academic career at the University of Illinois, Dr. Pruzansky was Associate Director of the Cleft Palate Clinic which, in 1967,was expanded to become the first Center for Craniofacial Anomalies, with Dr. Pruzansky as its founding director. For 75 years UI Craniofacial Center has enhanced, transformed, and expanded the way children and families in impacted by craniofacial and facial conditions and anomalies are treated. CFC is one of the oldest and largest facilities in the world dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of infants, children, adolescents, and adults. Their comprehensive multidisciplinary approach enables the clinicians and staff to see each family and child fully as individuals with unique needs. The foundation of relationship building between clinicians and patients along with the state of the art care creates an environment where patients regain their confidence and sense of power in their journey. Face the Future Foundation is so proud to be a staunch supporter of this renowned center and to celebrate their accomplishments and work next month at our Diamond Jubilee evening. So what does 75 years of excellence in care look like? Watch below as a young girl receives her very own prosthetic ear created by the talented anaplastologist and medical artists. At CFC children have the opportunity to share their experiences through play with dolls that are made to look similar to them. Congratulations to this year’s Adrienne L. Green Scholarship recipient, Paul Hoang! Paul’s journey into entrepreneurship began in eighth grade when he received his first pair of Air Jordan 31’s, igniting his passion for shoes and business. Raised by his grandparents and extended family, Paul learned the importance of hard work and self-sufficiency. Selling shoes online taught him about supply and demand, marketing, and negotiation. Now, Paul aims to further his education in business and data science at Truman City College and hopes to transfer to Illinois Institute of Technology to expand his knowledge in technology and finance. Paul is extremely grateful and blessed with the opportunity to be selected for the Adrienne L. Green Scholarship. This opportunity allows him to focus more on school than working a job to pay for school as well as bringing him closer to becoming a data scientist. Paul is very excited to use this scholarship to further himself educationally to achieve his goals of going to a university after finishing his final year at Truman College. This weekend, Face the Future Foundation brought back our summer picnic for the patients, families and clinicians of UI Craniofacial Center! The weather was perfect at Burnham Park, right off the lake, where we held the picnic. The afternoon was filled with yard games, bounce houses and inflatables, face painting and illustrations, hot dogs and sweet treats! Each child that came to the event received a full new backpack of school supplies to set them up for success for the new school year. Face the Future Foundation granted this year’s Adrienne L. Green Scholarship recipient with his well deserved 5,000 dollar scholarship for higher education. The smiles were as bright as the sun, and the laughter could be heard for hours from children and CFC clinicians alike! Something beautiful, perhaps perfect happens when we humanize clinicians, surgeons, patients and families. Bring patients with Craniofacial and facial conditions together with their clinical team outside of the office, add in a warm breeze, some good food, yard games and bounce houses and suddenly the titles fall and all that is left are friends and mentors. The benefits of humanizing patients and bonding with clinicians outside of the office walls are endless. Anxiety decreases, the perception of who this patient is outside of the medical terminology expands, and the individual has a name that doesn’t begin with “patient “. Face the Future foundation and UI Craniofacial Center together are able to make the unimaginable possible. This is one of those powerful ways. We’re coming in a little bit late to the party but here we are! This week is International Face Equality Week! This year’s theme is “My Face is a Masterpiece”, Using art as a tool for social good. Art is the universal language that intersects all languages, transcends all cultures, and all diversity. Yet , facial differences are often still portrayed in the lens of tragedy, or villain, or overlooked in media all together. We’re aiming to see that shift and one way is by sharing our stories, one of the most powerful tools. By proudly wearing our differences with confidence, and by educating others on the importance of positive representation and laws that protect the rights and safety of individuals with facial differences globally. My face is absolutely a masterpiece and so is yours! 1 in 700 children are born with a cleft lip and palate. May 4th-12th is Cleft Lip and Palate Awareness Week and we are joining with @clapacommunity based out of the UK to share our story. Face the Future Foundation Board member Rena Rosen was born with a Cleft Lip and Palate and shares an excerpt of what she spoke about at our Glitter and Gold event back in November. She says, “When children or young adults are looked at and identified by textbook examples of Craniofacial anomalies needing to be fixed, we miss out on the full human being. Each person enters into medical spaces with their own story, their own experiences, and their own trauma. It is our job as at Face the Future Foundation to staunchly support CFC so that they can do their incredible work of creating that safe space where each individual feels respected, included in every step of discussion and feels as their unique experiences are valid.” Every face tells a story, what’s yours?
