People make choices. Choices make history.
About us
What we Do: Facing History & Ourselves uses lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate. Our classroom resources and professional development offerings examine racism, antisemitism, and prejudice at pivotal moments in history; we help students learn about the impact of choices made in the past, and connect them to the choices they will confront in their own lives. Facing our shared history and how it informs our attitudes and behaviors allows us to choose a world of equity and justice. Our Values: We create space for each other. We seek out and learn from diverse experiences and perspectives. We are curious. We ask big questions, create connections, and dig into the complexity of our actions and behaviors, past and present. We listen first and listen actively. We consider listening a practice and skill, not just an activity. We act with empathy and kindness. We work to understand others and build a world where everyone feels they belong. We stand up. We recognize injustice and speak up when we see it. “We can still love [this country]... and engage with it. We can love with a broken heart.” We were grateful to gather supporters and teachers in New York on Monday for Reckoning with America's Complexity: Navigating Conversations in 2024, where they heard from author, professor, and Board of Scholars member Dolly Chugh. With the presidential election just a week away, Dolly led us in a powerful discussion about finding common ground in polarizing times before NY Program Director Kevin Feinberg connected the conversation to Facing History's ongoing work to promote civil engagement and democracy in classrooms. What happens when we see past differences and communicate as human beings across conflict? Facing History recently organized an educator-facilitated discussion that included Daniel and Easha, two teenagers who co-founded an interfaith club at their high school. The powerful conversation left participants and listeners alike feeling uplifted and hopeful about a path forward through the turmoil and divisiveness of our current moment. Click through to read the event highlights and watch the webinar itself—then jump into the comments for a link to a podcast episode featuring these two inspiring students fighting antisemitism and Islamophobia in their school and community.
