About us
The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the Poynter Institute was launched in 2015 to bring together the growing community of fact-checkers around the world and advocates of factual information in the global fight against misinformation. We enable fact-checkers through networking, capacity building and collaboration. IFCN promotes the excellence of fact-checking to more than 100 organizations worldwide through advocacy, training and global events. Our team monitors trends in the fact-checking field to offer resources to fact-checkers, contribute to public discourse and provide support for new projects and initiatives that advance accountability in journalism. We believe truth and transparency can help people be better informed and equipped to navigate harmful misinformation.

The passage of a controversial law targeting organizations receiving foreign funding has Georgian fact-checkers concerned about the sustainability of their operations, the safety of their staff and families, and the erosion of democratic institutions. But they won’t back down. “We continue this fight,” said Tamar Kintsurashvili, editor-in-chief of Myth Detector. Read the story: https://lnkd.in/e6dvYtra

Democracy is resilient. Still, populism has emerged as a major threat, Harvard government professor Steven Levitsky warned fact-checkers on Friday at #GlobalFact11. “The world is still considerably more democratic than it was in the 1990s despite the rise of China, despite (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, despite Trump, despite social media, despite AI, despite COVID,” Levitsky said. “To me, that suggests a fair amount of democratic resilience.” Tap the link to read the story #factsmatter https://lnkd.in/eXy6AyB4

Time and time again during #GlobalFact11, fact-checkers criticized tech platforms onstage, all the while flanked by a large screen thanking those companies for their financial sponsorship of the event. On one hand, tech companies like Meta and TikTok provide considerable financial support to fact-checking organizations. On the other, fact-checkers say the companies don’t do enough to stem the flow of mis- and disinformation. “We’re frenemies,” said Nobel Prize winner and keynote speaker Maria Ressa. Here’s a look inside the complicated relationship between fact-checkers and tech giants: https://lnkd.in/eEj5RgbC
