Confronting problems; protecting our way of life.

About us

At Fairbanks PD, we know this community is resilient and independent. The problem is that there are some threats to safety and security that individuals are not equipped to handle on their own. Fairbanks police confront those problems, protecting our way of life. This is our community, too. It’s important that our families thrive in safety and security. That’s why we endeavor to increase our capabilities through training, equipment, and professional development to meet the challenges we all face.

  • Our two new recruit officers have successfully graduated from ALET and are back at FPD! Alaska Law Enforcement Training (ALET) is a seventeen week course providing instruction in criminal investigation, police procedure, laws, and physical skills. It’s where new FPD recruits are sent after hire in order to meet requirements for police officer certification in Alaska. Please join us in congratulating these recruits on their successful completion of this rigorous course! Officer Nathan Jackson grew up in Delaware. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Delaware in 2020. Prior to coming to FPD, Jackson worked as a fish biologist in Arizona for 2 years. This is not the first time Officer Jackson has worked in Alaska; he collected data on commercial boats on the south coast of Alaska for the National Marine Fisheries Service for a time. Officer Jackson loves to fish and was really drawn to the small city feel of Fairbanks. We’re glad to welcome him to our department and our community! Officer Tyler Holloway is originally from Northern Colorado, where he grew up enjoying the outdoors. Officer Holloway has a great passion for hunting and fishing, which is how he ended up in Alaska. He met his wife, Rachel, in 2018 while working in Fairbanks for the summer, and they were married in December of 2022. Just a few months ago, they welcomed a new addition to their family, a baby girl. On becoming a police officer, Tyler had the following to say, “I have truly come to love Alaska and love being here in Fairbanks. I enjoy helping people and speaking with other people, which is why I’ve always wanted to be a police officer. I also believe in standing up for what is right and what you believe in no matter what.” Welcome, recruits! Make us proud! • Congratulations to Deputy Chief Rick Sweet, who graduated from the FBI National Academy Session 290 today! The FBI National Academy is internationally known for its academic excellence. It provides officers ten weeks of education about contemporary policing issues and leadership development. Participants are highly respected members of law enforcement and must have proven records of professionalism within their agencies to attend. Deputy Chief Rick Sweet has been serving the Fairbanks community with FPD since 2012, when he came to us after 26 years in the U.S. Army. Since his arrival at FPD, he served as a Community Police Officer, Field Training Officer, Field Training Coordinator, and Patrol Sergeant. In 2019, he was promoted to Lieutenant where he served in the Patrol Division, but later was asked to be the Acting Deputy Chief and Acting Chief. He was officially promoted to Deputy Chief in 2021. Former FBINAA graduates from Fairbanks Police Department include Lt. Amy Davis, Chief Ron Dupee, retired Chiefs Eric Jewkes and Dan Hoffman, retired Deputy Chiefs Brad Johnson and Dan Welborn, and retired Lieutenants Greg Foster and Tara Tippett. The National Academy is held at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, the same facility where the FBI trains its new special agents and intelligence analysts. We are so proud of DC Sweet and look forward to having him back home at FPD!

  • Police Memorial Day will be observed this Friday, May 17th at 11am at the Trooper Gabe Rich and Trooper Scott Johnson Memorial Park in North Pole (2870 Doughchee Avenue). At this solemn occasion, members of local law enforcement and community residents will show gratitude for the courage and dedication of our fallen heroes and will show support for the loved ones they left behind. Among the Alaskan law enforcement officers to be honored are our three fallen Fairbanks Police Officers: Chief Alvin Miller (EOW 11/02/1908), Officer Kevin Lamm (EOW 01/01/1998), and Sergeant Allen Brandt (EOW 10/28/2016). Gone, but never forgotten. 💙 #AlaskaPolice #PoliceMemorial #ThinBlueLine

  • At FPD, there are several non-sworn positions that play integral roles in the success our department has in confronting the challenges facing the Fairbanks community. Our Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) is one of those positions, and that is why we are so happy to welcome Joshua Jacobs to our team as our new CSI/Evidence Technician! Josh was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He initially became interested in crime scene investigation and law enforcement by watching shows related to the field. In high school he became very interested in science and decided to take a course in Forensic Science. From there he did a ride-along with the Baltimore Police Department Crime Scene Unit, and after that, he knew he wanted to become a Crime Scene Investigator. He went to West Virginia University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic and Investigative Science on the examiner track. While at school, he completed courses such as Forensic Photography, Crime Scene Investigation 1&2, Latent Fingerprints, Biological Evidence, and Microscopy. During the summer of 2023 he completed an internship with the Prince George’s County Police Department Crime Scene Investigation Division. Additional subdisciplines of crime scene investigation that Josh is interested in are bloodstain pattern analysis and shooting incident reconstruction. He applied for and was hired with FPD in late 2023 and just recently moved up here. Josh had the following to say regarding what led him here: “What attracted me to the Fairbanks Police Department is their commitment to working alongside the community of Fairbanks to make it a safer place to live. Serving in this role allows me to assist with bringing a positive change to the community. What attracted me to Fairbanks is the scenery and its small, local community. So far, I enjoy working at the Fairbanks Police Department and it’s been amazing working with individuals who care and love the community of Fairbanks.” Please join us in welcoming CSI Jacobs to the FPD family and to the Fairbanks community! #CrimeSceneInvestigator #lawenforcement #CSI

  • Talk about an advocate for Fairbanks! Last week, Fairbanks Police Department’s Deputy Chief Rick Sweet traveled to Juneau, Alaska to advocate to legislators for Fairbanks to receive funding for a Crisis Now Stabilization Center. A stabilization center is the next step that our Crisis Now team is working to accomplish in order to provide for the comprehensive, appropriate, and immediate provision of behavioral health services to the community. The center would follow a ‘No Wrong Door’ policy which means 100% acceptance for anyone who walks through the door. Crisis care staff would provide engagement and care for those in a crisis to include suicidal crisis, medical clearance for all, medication-assisted treatment, connections to post-crisis care including long-term treatment, and medication management. Deputy Chief Sweet has worked side by side with Crisis Now Coordinator Brenda McFarlane, who also traveled to Juneau to advocate for the center, since the inception of the Crisis Now model in Fairbanks. FPD and community partners that support Crisis Now are on the front line of confronting the serious problems that come from the lack of comprehensive #mentalhealth care available in our community. #crisisleadership #suicideprevention #behavioralhealth
