A fully-funded Fellowship Program devoted to ethical leadership for graduate students and early-career professionals.
About us
FASPE is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote ethical leadership and responsibility among professionals—beginning with recognition of the influence that professionals have on all aspects of contemporary society. FASPE’s distinctive approach is to examine the roles and behavior of individual professionals in Germany and elsewhere between 1933 and 1945 as an initial framework for approaching ethical responsibility in the professions today. By examining the behavior and motivations of the professionals who -- by choice and action -- enabled and enacted Nazi policies, we establish the importance and urgency of professionalism and ethical leadership today.

Do journalists have a responsibility to defend democracy? How do we report accurately and thoroughly under repressive regimes? What can we do to gain and preserve public trust in the media? This summer, I had the opportunity to discuss these questions and more with an amazing group of journalists, doctors, and clergy thanks to FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics). We traveled through Germany and Poland, studying the ethics of our professions through the lens of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. The conversations we had and the sites we visited will always stay with me and inform my future reporting. Many thanks to Sheila Coronel and Robe Imbriano for guiding us through these complicated questions. And a big thank you to Rebecca Scott, David Goldman, and Thorsten Wagner for leading the fellowship with such wisdom. If you're an early-career journalist interested in diving into ethics, I would highly recommend applying to FASPE. I'm happy to answer any questions! Earlier this year, I was honored to be chosen as a 2024 FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) Journalism Fellow alongside 12 other incredible journalists. For two weeks in Berlin, Krakow, and Oświęcim, my cohort and I studied journalistic ethics through the lens of the Holocaust. We examined how the gradual erosion of ethical standards and self-censorship led to journalists being complicit in the Nazi regime by inadequately covering, or misrepresenting, these crimes. The FASPE Fellowship was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life, both professionally and personally. I’m filled with immense gratitude for the trip and the amazing people I met. A special thank you to Sheila Coronel and Robe Imbriano the stellar journalism faculty members who facilitated these difficult discussions with grace and openness.

Four Law School alumni, Sean B., Elisabeth Brennen, Chaila Fraundorfer, and Hinh Tran, recently traveled to Poland and Germany to study the Holocaust—not from a historical perspective but from their perspective as lawyers. They came away from the experience with a new context for ethical responsibility in their profession. They were four of 14 fellows in the 2024 Law Program of the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE), which uses the conduct of professionals in Nazi-occupied Europe as a framework for approaching ethical responsibility. Now in its 14th year, FASPE annually grants 80-90 fellowships to graduate students and early-career professionals in business, design and technology, journalism, law, medicine, and the seminary. The law fellows traveled with the business and design and technology fellows. Over the course of two weeks, they attended seminars and visited sites of historic importance to consider ethical constructs and norms in their respective professions. Following, the Michigan Law alumni reflect on the profound impact of the experience: https://lnkd.in/g2Z5qjqQ

Being a 2024 FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) Fellow has been the most professionally and personally enriching experience I've had in recent memory. This opportunity has allowed me to engage in learning, reflection, and conversations that quite frankly, most people don't get to have outside of a grad school setting (if even that). See FASPE's post below for some brief thoughts on my time in Germany and Poland as part of the fellowship program. Capstone project coming soon!
Reflecting on our recent experience with FASPE, 2024 Business Fellow Marissa Guiang (pictured in the center of the first row) shared, “I came away with a better understanding of the interdisciplinary applications of ethics, as well as the responsibilities I have within my profession. I learned so much from the incredible FASPE staff, world-class professors, and impressive peers. I think what shocked me the most was how much the program challenged my thinking, and helped me give grace and understanding to those whose political conviction, religious ideology, and corporate outlook are vastly different from mine.” Stay tuned for more reflections from our 2024 Fellows!
