Hey, FAST members! Check out the Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style exhibit at the de Young Museum before it closes on August 11, 2024. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore San Francisco's rich history through fashion. 📍 Location: de Young Museum, San Francisco 🕒 Exhibit Dates: Now through August 11, 2024 About the Exhibit: Discover one of the most iconic collections of 20th- and 21st-century women’s clothing in the United States. This exhibition features 100 collection highlights and local loans of high fashion and haute couture. It's the first major presentation of the de Young Museum’s costume collection in over 35 years, showcasing designs from legendary names such as Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, Christopher John Rogers, Comme des Garçons, and Rodarte. ✨ Many of these designs have never been shown before and reflect San Francisco’s long-standing tradition of self-expression through fashion. This past April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In effort to highlight FAST's commitment to community and support, we partnered with Associated Students of the University of California and the office of Senator Aanya Niharika Schoetz, who wanted to work with FAST to create something to artistically and respectfully illustrate the importance of Denim Day. Her team, along with our Sustainability Department, sourced denim, from vintage jeans and jackets to deadstock fabric for designers usage. 'Denim Day' encourages people to wear denim, calling awareness to victim blaming and seeking to educate people on sexual assault. The history of wearing denim connects back to a 1992 court case where a r*pe conviction was overturned by the Italian Supreme Court, because the 18-year-old victim was wearing tight jeans, implying that she must have assisted in the taking off of her jeans, suggesting she gave consent. By wearing denim, we challenge and dispel harmful misconceptions about sexual violence, underscoring that no one should be judged or blamed based on their appearance or clothing choices. Fashion and Student Trends at UC Berkeley takes on Sustainability This past semester, FAST was able to secure a grant that allowed for more ways to cultivate a sustainable community and continue our efforts that extend into changing the traditional way fashion interacts with our environment.
