About us
Fay School was founded in 1866 and was the first junior boarding school in the United States. Our 63-acre campus is located in Southborough, MA, just 25 miles from Boston. Our community includes 475 students in kindergarten through grade nine. Of those, 150 students are boarders who come from across the United States and more than 25 countries. We are proud of our authentically diverse and multicultural community. Fay is recognized around the world for its superior educational program, and our graduates are accepted to top secondary schools, including Phillips Exeter Academy, Phillips Academy Andover, Deerfield Academy, and Groton School. In addition to the core courses of mathematics, science, English, and history, students take art, music, and world languages. Students also focus on the design thinking process with courses in our 3,000 square-foot Innovation Lab. Community members embrace our five core values - Academic Excellence, Honorable Conduct, Dedicated Service, Earnest Effort, and Wellness of Mind, Body, and Spirit - and our school motto, Poteris Modo Velis (“You can if you will”) highlights our community's emphasis on determination, effort, and resilience. Sixth graders have been exploring themes from A Work in Progress by Jarrett Lerner through a combined English and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum. Led by English teacher Lara Gleason and Director of Counseling Services Shannon Dugger, students delved into the story of Will, a middle schooler grappling with body image challenges and his journey toward self-acceptance. Last week, students and faculty came together to celebrate Diwali with a vibrant presentation that showcased the spirit of the festival of light. Teachers Rachana Sudhaman and Shehla Eledroos led the event, where students shared insights into Diwali’s significance and the ways it's celebrated worldwide. The community was captivated by a prayer song, followed by a percussion performance on the traditional mridangam drum. The celebration culminated with two dances: a high-energy Bollywood number featuring Fay faculty members, and a colorful Ghoomer Rajasthani dance performed by a group of third and sixth graders. It was a joyful celebration of culture, unity, and tradition!

This month, third graders have been calculating elapsed time and refining their analog clock skills by doing some party planning! Each student designed an invitation for a two-hour party with an agenda of activities for their guests. On the back of their invitation, students used analog clocks to track the start and end time for each activity. Students followed up this activity by planning an entire day of activities running from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. They were challenged to include meals of varying lengths, at least three activities taking place in three different locations, and to increase the difficulty of their calculations by incorporating at least one activity with an elapsed time that does not end in 1 or 0.
