The Future is Female Strong | Women-Led Community for Change | Empowering Females of All Ages to Step into Business

About us

Hi, we are Female Strong! We are on a mission to close the gender gap and empower young women to step up in business and life. Female Strong provides middle and high school-aged girls an opportunity to expand their self-confidence and business acumen in a supportive, women-led environment. By next year we will have seen over 1,000 girls complete our confidence-building entrepreneurial program—95% of which come from challenging circumstances and diverse backgrounds. We also offer community for female leaders and professionals of all ages. Our core offering is a six-month after-school program that teaches business principles, soft skills and life skills. Students walk away with firsthand knowledge of building a business and the skills needed to persevere in a corporate setting. Our strong focus on entrepreneurship sets us apart—no one else in this space offers what we offer. The future is female strong. Join us, won’t you?

We love SRW | C.A. Fortune! Thank you to Kate Weidner (she/her) and Julie Baker (she/her) for hosting our YEA! Chicago students last night (and providing endless snacks). This YEA! Chicago class field trip gave our budding entrepreneurs invaluable insights into building brands that stand out in today’s market. Kate’s experience as a judge at our Investor Panel earlier this year also offered students a firsthand look at what makes a business fundable: innovation, preparation, and addressing a market gap. If you’re a professional interested in empowering future founders through mentorship or other hands on volunteer opportunities, we’d love to hear from you! Submit your interest today at https://lnkd.in/gZjVnP2P

Both women and men more readily associate men with leadership. This is fueled by two related forms of bias women face: performance bias and attribution bias. Performance bias is based on deep-rooted—and incorrect—assumptions about women’s and men’s abilities. We tend to underestimate women’s performance and overestimate men’s. Attribution bias is closely linked to performance bias. Because we see women as less competent than men, we tend to give them less credit for accomplishments and blame them more for mistakes. Learn how to identify and challenge bias head on with our #50Ways to #FightBias program here: https://lnkd.in/e7awYFG

According to a recent U.S. Chamber of Commerce report, women now hold 35% of the highest-paying jobs in the U.S.—a big leap from 13% in 1980. But while progress is being made, there’s still more to do to close the gender wage gap, elevate women in leadership roles, and ensure an equitable workplace for all. At Female Strong, we’re committed to preparing the next generation of female leaders by providing hands-on programs, mentorship, and real-world experiences that help build confidence in young girls. That’s why we’re proud to highlight Forbes' 2024 Best Employers for Women, a list of 600 companies leading the way toward more equitable and inclusive workplaces. We had an amazing visit to the 1871 Innovation Hub at THE MART with our YEA! students! A big thank you to our insightful guest speakers, Melanie Griffin Pugh, Director of Development at 1871, and Shawn Johnson, Founder & Owner of CRAFIAN Artisanal Toffee, for their invaluable advice to our idea stage young entrepreneurs! Melanie spoke on the importance of tenacity and resilience in entrepreneurship, while also highlighting how empathy and active listening can enhance communication and leadership. Her key takeaway? Don’t take the "Nos" personally. Shawn shared how she connected the dots between her experiences, skills, and passions to find the perfect business opportunity. She also advised on finding the balance between listening to customer feedback and staying true to your vision. Guest speakers like Melanie & Shawn are critical to our students' growth, giving them real-world insight and inspiration to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. At Female Strong, we believe that these experiences are key to showing our girls what they can be!

Yesterday, we welcomed the newest cohort of YEA! Chicago students and parents for Orientation, and we couldn’t be more excited to kick off in-person classes next week! To truly guage the impact of this program, you have to hear directly from one of our students. Meet Stefanie Giurcanu, Founder of RoSheVentures and a 2024 YEA! Chicago graduate. Stefanie’s journey from launching her non-profit focused on empowering young women in STEM in Romania to earning a spot at the National Student Leadership Conference Medicine Intensive Program at Northwestern University is truly inspiring. To hear about Stefanie's experience, visit https://lnkd.in/gEmWyBB6 This program would not be possible without our 2024-2025 YEA! class sponsors, WeWork and Wintrust Financial Corporation. Our corporate partners are helping us shape the next generation of female business leaders, one program at a time. Contact Sarah@femalestrong.org to engage your company in 2025.

Last week's #VBGivesBack events in Chicago and Denver raised an incredible $8,036.80 for Female Strong’s programming — nearly doubling last year's total! A huge thank you to all who attended and to Veronica Beard for donating 15% of all event sales to support our mission to close the gender and confidence gaps for middle and high school girls. Special thanks to artist Kelli D., whose limited edition prints were a highlight of the event and to Gallagher for stepping in with a company match! Events like these allow us to expand the reach of our programming for young women in Chicagoland and beyond. Thank you Emily Smith, SIOR, Jen Tadin, Courtney Wright, Margaret McWeeney, & Florence Ann Romano for putting these events together 💗
