Organizations use surveys to get feedback from their employees. I remember suggestion boxes were used for that back in the day. Which method do you think has been more effective in addressing employee concerns? The suggestion box concept was simple. Mostly anonymously, employees placed slips of paper with their comments, opinions, and perceptions into the box. And then HR, the president’s office, or whatever team managed the process, checked the boxes, gathered the feedback, and decided what to do with it. Simple, right? But also manual, time-consuming, and unscientific. A Top Workplaces Research Lab study revealed that today, 84 percent of organizations electronically survey their employees about once a year. These surveys can be a valuable tool for gathering feedback, addressing issues, and making informed decisions to improve the employee experience and organizational effectiveness. And, employee survey results are used to establish employer brands and attract top talent. But be careful, like any good thing, too much can be simply that – too much. Employee newsletters used to be photocopied in-house and distributed via interoffice mailboxes. Content included a few company metrics and employee accolades. Everyone seemed to read them. But what about today? As technology became more sophisticated, and companies focused more on giving employees information – LOTS of information – employee newsletters became more complex and more common. Now newsletters focus on specific topics, projects, departments, etc. They include surveys, and videos and URLs linking to intranets and more information. They are emailed instead of printed. Depending on the role within an organization, an employee can receive several newsletters a week or month: one from “corporate,” another from his or her department, one from employee service groups such as HR or Facilities, a newsletter from the division C-suite leader, one because he or she is a stakeholder or contributor on a project, and yet another counting down to an important company milestone or activity, like Open Enrollment. That’s a lot, and all of these newsletter producers are competing for attention from the same readers. So, are newsletters still effective? Has newsletter effectiveness decreased as the use of them increased? My first career job was junior spokesman. My primary role was to keep the media and the public informed about the company. But I also handled a few one-way communications to employees. Back then communications roles mostly were recruited as PR opportunities. There were no postings for positions focused on employee comms. My, have things changed … Today employee communications is a whole thing, an entire practice. Within an organization you usually can find at least one internal expert, or external consultant, dedicated to keeping employees informed and engaged. It grew and evolved, and organizations increased its importance, and their investment, in delivering and achieving healthy awareness among and engagement with their greatest asset - employees.
