Geothermal is scaling faster than ever—and new research shows why it’s poised to power the AI era. A recent paper co-authored by Fervo's CTO and co-founder, Jack Norbeck, alongside leading experts from Stanford University and Berkeley Lab, explores how Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) are providing firm, around-the-clock power—exactly what’s needed as electricity demand surges. Published in 𝑁𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑒𝑤𝑠 𝐶𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑇𝑒𝑐ℎ𝑛𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑦, the paper highlights how advancements in drilling and subsurface technology are unlocking geothermal’s full potential. Key findings: 🔹 Geothermal is scaling to much larger projects, with innovations like polycrystalline diamond compact bits, multiwell drilling pads, and horizontal drilling driving down costs and enabling gigawatt-scale development. 🔹 EGS expands geothermal’s reach by enhancing subsurface permeability, allowing for energy production in areas that were previously inaccessible. 🔹 Innovations learned from the oil and gas industry are driving faster project development and accelerating geothermal’s commercialization. As AI, cloud computing, and electrification push energy demand to new heights, EGS is emerging as a critical solution for clean, firm power. Reliable, 24/7 clean energy requires smart innovation—and strategic financing. Last fall an X-Caliber Rural Capital affiliate closed a $100M construction loan to support Cape Station, the world’s largest next-generation geothermal project. This financing is accelerating deployment, reducing costs, and ensuring that firm, carbon-free power reaches the grid faster. As electricity demand surges—driven by AI, data centers, and electrification—scaling geothermal has never been more critical. We appreciate X-Caliber Rural Capital’s support in advancing Cape Station. Watch the video to hear from Fervo CEO and co-founder Tim Latimer and the XRC team on why this project is a milestone for clean energy. #Geothermal #CleanEnergy #FirmPower #EnergyInnovation #InnovativeFinancing Chris Callahan Jordan Blanchard Nash Stapleton Bonnie Habyan Bucki Rogers

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is taking important steps to advance geothermal energy development with the Final Categorical Exclusion for Geothermal Resource Confirmation and the Proposed Categorical Exclusion for Geothermal Exploration. These updates will simplify geothermal permitting, reducing timelines and costs, and enabling the industry to deliver more clean, reliable power. We commend the U.S. Department of the Interior for its leadership in unlocking more geothermal energy resources. These changes will help create jobs, strengthen American energy security, and increase the supply of clean energy from America's public lands. This is a critical time to increase the supply of domestic energy and geothermal provides a unique value: minimal supply chain risks, low land use, and dependable 24/7 power. We look forward to working with the Department of the Interior and Congress to continue powering geothermal forward.
