We get the amazing opportunity to chat with many small business owners & makers from all walks of life and get to talk shop with folks who work with makers as well. Over the years, we've picked up on some interesting patterns and common challenges. Some have developed more in light of how business is/can be done, and some are probably never going to change...but how we (collectively) approach those challenges might! So...here's the first in our Tips for Makers Series. If you've already been doing this, what has been one of your favorite experiences in collaborating with other makers?

National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbors' Porch Day is this Thursday. If you happen to be the fortunate recipient of the abundance of someone's garden harvest...or if you're looking for another way to serve them up, here's a wonderful way to enjoy this fresh & nutritious summer squash! Here's one of our favorite recipes - Lemony Dill Zucchini Salad - on the blog at Fillmore Container It is crazy simple and quite flexible. ~Slice zucchini thin in length-wise slices. ~Salt the slices and let sit in the fridge for 30-minutes. ~After 30-minutes, pour off excess fluid from squash and rinse to remove extra salt. ~Mix up dressing – equal parts olive oil and lemon juice and garlic chopped (to your liking). You can add herbs like dill or mint. ~Pour dressing over zucchini and refrigerator for at least an hour. You can make this the day before – it will simply continue to soak in those wonderful flavors. You’ll notice that I don’t have measurements. Don’t let that scare you! I’d suggest that you start slicing away until you think you have enough, then adjust the dressing accordingly. It does last well, so while you’re making a batch for that pot-luck, work in a little extra to be sure you have some for a couple of side salads throughout the week...or maybe share some with your neighbor!

We see all kinds of orders here at Fillmore Container! As our customers grow, more of them are transitioning into freight orders which are picked, wrapped and shipped on pallet(s). People often assume that palletized or freight orders are huge orders...but they're often not. At check out, on our website, if there is a less expensive freight option for shipping, it will show up in the list of shipping options. Whether it qualifies depends on the dimensional weight of that order (the weight and the space it takes up). Once you see the freight option, the cost of the shipping usually jumps in increments of 200lbs. This means that you could continue to add more products without increasing your shipping cost...until the weight kicks the cost into the next tier. While there are other considerations - whether or not a trailer can access your delivery location, if you need a lift gate, how frequently trailers with lift gates are able to service your location, etc...it's worth exploring whether this is a viable option for your business!
