What's up in the Living Labs? Last week was intense for the Forest Fire Prevention and Defence Service of Xunta de Galicia! On Tuesday, the team led a workshop with the community of Trelle to illustrate the risks of extreme forest fires. The day after, they moved from theory to action and the village became the theatre of a successful extreme wildfire drill with the following maneuvers: ➡️ Rescue in the forest fire of a trapped operative, with water line and double effect nozzle 🏡 Protection of a building with retardant and helicopter discharges. 🧯 Containment of the left flank with water line and tactical fire. Trelle is a safe model village: if you want to discover more about this innovative way to build fire-resilient communities, check this article🔗 https://lnkd.in/exzYbJ7p

Let’s talk about FIRE-RESults 💡 As part of an #InnovationAction, FIRE-RES partner Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) has teamed up with the Bombers of Generalitat de Catalunya to investigate the dangers posed by wildfire pollutants, specifically black carbon and PM 2.5, to firefighters in Catalonia🧯 Covering data from 2022-2024, the study highlights important findings about exposure concentrations during different fire management tasks 👩🚒 For instance, prescribed burns are a safe practice to lower the risk of wildfires...but when it comes to health hazards, they expose firefighters to the same risk as actual wildfires. Read the full article to explore the implications and the innovative solutions being developed to protect those on the front lines 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gMEMrFeQ
Food for thought 💭 Fire Wine is our viticulture-oriented #InnovationAction by Centre de Ciència i Tecnologia Forestal de Catalunya: it aims to create a brand reclaiming the role of vineyards in preventing wildfires. That's the case of the D.O. Pla de Bages, part of Fire Wine network, which gathers 17 wineries keeping these agricultural spaces alive. This article by Coline Pacton (Università degli Studi di Genova) shares some insights from field research on the case of the Bages comarca 🍇 Who are the stakeholders? What are the difficulties that often lead to land abandonment, and why are these scattered vineyards crucial for more resilient landscapes? Learn more about this research between heritage, culture, and strategic landscape management 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eaKiB_Ru
Exploring winegrowing practices as levers for fire risk prevention: a territorial approach in Bages territory Author: Coline Pacton This article outlines a field approach conducted in Bages comarca from March to July 2024 as part of a research project titled "Interfaces between vineyards and forests: strategic locations for planning a resilient territory." This approach highlighted the strategic role of viticultural actors in this fire-prone territory, particularly in relation to their position relative to the forests. The aim of our research in Bages is to examine how fire risk prevention can be approached based on existing agricultural practices in this territory, whose heritage is closely linked to viticulture. The goal is to determine whether these practices, their interfaces, and their locations can provide opportunities for fire risk prevention in this area.
