FlexIble, predictive and Renewable Electricity powered electrochemical toolbox For a sustainable transition of the catalyst-based European chemicaL industrY. The FIREFLY project supports the sustainable evolution of the catalyst-based chemical industry towards its electrification and reduced third-party dependence on metals and fossil energy. The FIREFLY concept relies on the development of: • Electro-driven technologies for metal recycling from spent, waste, and off-specification catalysts available in Europe • Efficient integration of renewable electricity • A digital tool for predictive decision-making • Production of (electro)catalysts for innovative (electro)chemical processes that overcome traditional production routes associated with high operating conditions, greenhouse gas emissions, and lack of circularity FIREFLY is a European project funded under the Horizon Europe programme with a budget of €11,078,742. Meet Savla just concluded his master's thesis at Ghent University, with Gijs Du Laing and Xochitl Dominguez Benetton as promoters, and Luis F. Leon-Fernandez as supervisor. His research, conducted at VITO, "Precious metals upcycling from complex waste mixtures with electrochemical methods," resulted in significant insights for the #GDEx process, especially related to gas mass transfer and its influence in metal recovery. His insights will further result in improving the recovery efficiency of the platinum group metals #PGMs (within e.g., the #recycling of #EndOfLife #catalyticconverters, #photovoltaic #PV panels, and printed board #circuits #PCBAs), and the #valvemetals W, Mo, and V (within e.g., the recycling of #DeNOx #catalysts), at laboratory and pilot scale, within the PEACOC and FIREFLY Horizon Europe projects. Beside his technical achievements, Meet demonstrated outstanding ethics, dedication, and talent for creating a #SustainableFuture. His work exceeded the expectations for such a young professional. 📸 or it didn't happen: Yesterday, we attended the SET_IndEU [#SETPlan #IWGIndustry 2024 Annual Event: Advancing #SustainableEnergy in Industry]. During the event, we discussed how the industry sector accounts for 25% of the EU's final energy consumption, with 75% still generated from fossil sources. Our project coordinator, Xochitl Dominguez Benetton introduced the #FireflyHorizonEurope mission, which aims to electrify a significant part of the #chemicals value chain in a #sustainable way. 🔎And, although not having yet reached M18, we reported few promising results, including notable recovery efficiencies for Zr, #PGMs and W. #ProjectUpdates: Developments in #PGM recovery with the Gas-diffusion Electrocrystallisation (#GDEx) process. VITO's proprietary GDEx process is recovering #platinum group metals into nanoparticles for catalytic applications in #FireflyHorizonEurope ➡ offering #innovative solutions for industrial waste streams. ✔Using procedures proven effective for multi-element capabilities, researchers at VITO investigated the formation of Pt-Pd alloy nanoclusters. 🔜 Researchers at Centrale Lille and Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha will test the catalytic activity of these particles within the #FireflyHorizonEurope demo cases.
