OCT IS FIRE PREVENTION MONTH: the statistics alone are begging for innovation in fire safety -- take a look: Roughly 2/3 of home fire deaths result from homes with INOPERABLE smoke alarms or no smoke alarms. 62% of HOME FIRE DEATH occur in homes with NON-WORKING smoke alarms There are more U.S. homes WITHOUT a working smoke alarm AND, we are most vulnerable while we are sleeping -- 11pm to 7am are the peak smoke alarm times There hasn't been a significant change in personal fire safety in over 100 years. Consumer Alert: Chemosphere journal published a recent study that uncovers high levels of brominated flame retardant in everyday toys and consumer products. It's a common safety practice for manufacturers to use fire retardant chemicals when making everyday home products, including televisions, smartphones, computers, gaming systems, and tablets as well as sofas, loveseats, recliners, office chairs, car upholstery, infant car seats, carpet padding, foam-padded yoga mats and padded baby items. Unfortunately, the study is showing that when we recycle plastics from contaminated electronic waste, these flame retardants are unintentionally contaminating other products downstream and we have produced a new problem -- Banned fire retardants are transferring from e-waste and ending up in your living space, leaching into our food from plastic kitchen utensils and children’s saliva through the mouthing of toys.
