Helping law firm owners grow wildly profitable firms | Trial lawyer & Founder of The Mike Morse Law Firm | Over $1.5B recovered for our clients | Keynote Speaker | Best-Selling Author | CEO of FIREPROOF

On Tuesday, my mom and I spent the day shooting three more commercials for my law firm. After appearing in dozens of ads for the Mike Morse Law Firm over the last decade, Sue Morse has become a household name in Detroit. People stop her on the street almost daily to say hi or get a selfie. And I'm known around town as "Sue's son", which is just fine with me. Why did we start including my mom in our TV ads? • We're a firm that values family, and including my mom aligned with that value. • We thought her warm personality would come across well on TV.   • My mom deserves a lot of credit for our firm's success. After all, I wouldn't be here without her. Most importantly, when I asked my mom if she'd be interested in doing a commercial, she loved the idea! In a world of vanilla lawyer advertising, you need to find your Cherry Garcia, your specific flavor that makes you stand out. Including my mom in our ads has been one of the best examples of my Cherry Garcia. This photo is from our shoot Tuesday. Can you guess who this guy on the left is supposed to be? ;-)

I got fired 3 years out of law school without warning. On that, I promised myself two things. 1. I would never work for somebody else again. 2. If I was ever lucky enough to have employees, I would treat them better. That was September 21, 1995. And 29 years later, I'm proud to say that I've stayed true to both promises. Today, our team at the Mike Morse Law Firm is more than 200 people. Many of us have been here for 10, 15, or even 20 years. Here's what treating people better looks like:  1. We offer generous time off from day 1 with the firm. 2. We pay better than most firms and offer signing bonuses.  3. We trust our people to be adults and have work-from-home and hybrid setups.  4. We have clear org structures.  Everyone knows who does what and who reports to who.  No committees. No messy partnership BS.  5. We want everybody working in their sweet spot, the point where the things you're great at overlap with the things you enjoy doing.  6. We want everyone to understand how the firm is doing financially.  7. We want every team member to know where they stand individually.  8. We participate in lots of community events, encourage pro bono work, and give you the time to actually do it. 9. We're opening a department dedicated to handling civil rights cases. 10. Our core values are aren't just window dressing. We talk about them routinely so everyone knows what is important to the firm and to me. 11. We also have a good time (this photo is from a party at my house last year). Thanks for all the kind messages on my firm's 29th anniversary. And if you're looking for your next opportunity, we're growing and need more great lawyers here in Michigan. My goal is that once somebody joins our firm, they never want to look for another job. Because I believe that people deserve a great place to work. Yes, even lawyers. ;-)

Helping law firm owners grow wildly profitable firms | Trial lawyer & Founder of The Mike Morse Law Firm | Over $1.5B recovered for our clients | Keynote Speaker | Best-Selling Author | CEO of FIREPROOF

I was working 80-hour weeks but didn’t actually know how my law firm was doing financially. I couldn't tell you: • how many cases we brought in • our revenue per case; • how long it took to resolve a typical case; or  • our profit margins. I didn't know my firm's numbers. Even though I'd been running a law firm for more than a decade, I still thought of myself not as a businessman, but as a lawyer who owned a law firm. Make no mistake— A law firm is a business. And not knowing my numbers was hurting my firm every day.  Without that information, my team and I were always reacting to problems instead of preventing them. We made too many decisions based on incomplete or insufficient information. Thanks in large part to my business coach and John Nachazel, who just celebrated his 16-year anniversary with the firm last week, we got a grip on our numbers. We developed the firm's first "jumbotron" in 2008. Our jumbotron is a scorecard that provides a real-time snapshot of key metrics: • Our monthly case intake; • Our average fee per case; • Marketing costs as a percentage of revenue; and • Our net profit margins. By tracking these numbers on a weekly basis, we gained insights that helped us make better, faster, and smarter decisions. We could take bold action with confidence. The benefits were immediate, and they have grown over time. We can forecast revenue with increasing accuracy. We can identify inefficiencies and optimize our operations We grow consistently (20-25% annually for over a decade now). Our firm's revenue has grown 10x, and we're on track to bring in $240 million this year. Knowing our numbers transformed the Mike Morse Law Firm, and this concept is so essential that it got its own chapter in our book, Fireproof (I'll link to the book below). If you don't know your numbers, I get it. I've been there. It's not too late to change that. And you need to. Your firm's future really does depend on it. Do you know your firm's numbers?

Yesterday, Mike had the honor of being a panelist at the 'Philanthropy: Past, Present, Future' luncheon hosted by Detroit Philanthropy. The panel, moderated by Detroit Philanthropy President Rachel M. Decker, also included insights from community leaders like DTE Energy CEO Anthony Earley and ASG Renaissance CEO Beth Ardisana. A stirring keynote from Wendy Lewis Jackson, Managing Director of the Kresge Foundation, left the attendees feeling inspired and energized. As philanthropy and community engagement have always been central to Mike's mission — both personally and professionally — this was an especially meaningful opportunity to reflect on lessons of the past and understand the current demands that will lead to transformational shifts ahead. Mike was deeply flattered to be invited to speak in front of the 300+ non-profit organizations in attendance. Thank you to Detroit Philanthropy for the invitation and to everyone who joined this invaluable discussion on making lasting impacts in our communities.
