Every Child Counts

About us

First 5 Alameda County is an innovative public entity created by passage of Proposition 10 in 1998 which added fifty cents per pack of cigarettes to help fund early care and education for children 0-5. Research shows that a child's brain develops most dramatically during the first five years of life. To ensure that more children are born healthy and reach their full potential, First 5 supports a comprehensive system of early childhood care that helps prepare kids for success in school and life. Our Vision Every child in Alameda County will have optimal health, development and wellbeing to reach his or her greatest potential. Our Mission In partnership with the community, we support a county-wide continuous prevention and early intervention system that promotes optimal health and development, narrows disparities and improves the lives of children 0 to 5 and their families.

Many thanks to all who attended our Policy Breakfast yesterday. It was an energizing morning to learn about the state of early care and education in Alameda County and throughout California. 👏 We were excited to recognize Congressmember Barbara Lee, State Senator Nancy Skinner, and Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson for their dedicated work in service of young children and families. Latinos make up 46% of California’s child care workforce, yet only 12% of early care and education leaders (ECE) are Latinos. At First 5 Alameda County, we support policies that stabilize, strengthen, and expand our diverse ECE workforce, ensuring that all voices are represented in leadership. By empowering Latino leaders and investing in ECE professionals, we can build a stronger, more inclusive future for our children. Source: Unidos for ECE #HispanicHeritageMonth
