The seafood industry relies on many workers to produce, harvest, and process fish and other seafood products. However, taking on a new job—especially if a worker must migrate between countries for that job—is often risky. Even before a worker steps foot in a processing facility or arrives at a vessel, they may accrue debts that make them vulnerable to coercion, exploitation, debt bondage, and threats. 📣 CTA: Justice for stranded fishworkers 🌊 In 2023, 24 Filipino fishermen were abandoned on 12 boats in Washington state, trapped in a legal and physical limbo. To date, they have not received what they were promised—fair wages and benefits. Labor rights exploitation is not something that is happening far away, and we urge seafood companies to conduct human rights due diligence to address workers' rights effectively. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security(DHS) has added seafood as one of three new high priority sectors for enforcement under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA). This year's updates to the UFLPA Strategy outline a number of commitments, including increased collaboration with stakeholders, increased enforcement, new high priority sectors, and expansion of the UFLPA Entity List, which currently include 68 People's Republic of China (PRC) based companies. By designating high priority sectors, DHS enables importers to focus their due diligence efforts on higher risk supply chains. https://lnkd.in/eJmTSSei
