This Week with Mayor Pete...
What a memorable week it's been!
Monday marked a landmark occasion as we unveiled the new monument at the Dayton VA Campus, titled Lincoln’s Promise. This incredible statue commemorates the Executive Order President Lincoln signed on March 3, 1865, which laid the foundation for what would become the Veterans Affairs Department. This historic order ensured that our wounded soldiers would receive the care they deserve. Just two years after the Civil War ended, the National Central Branch or "Soldier's Home" was established right here in Dayton, Ohio, and has been serving veterans for over 150 years. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the American Veterans Heritage Center (AVHC), particularly AVHC President Bill D., whose passion and tireless work made this vision a reality. The monument is truly spectacular, and I am proud to have been involved as a volunteer with AVHC.
On Tuesday, I attended a Community Forum at Way of the Cross Church to discuss the City-Led Ballot Issues for the upcoming November election, including Issue 22—the renewal of our current Police Levy. We also heard from Mad River Local Schools about their Permanent Improvement Levy and discussed potential improvements to Rohrer Park here in the City of Riverside, Ohio. I appreciate the residents who participated in this important dialogue.
For those who missed it, the Riverside Area Chamber of Commerce is holding an informational meeting on Wednesday, September 25th at Community Church (Burkhardt & Meyer) at 6 PM. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the upcoming Police Levy, School Levy, Dayton Metro Library, and Five Rivers MetroParks levy. The Montgomery County Board of Elections will also be on hand for voter registration. These decisions on November 5th are critical, and we hope this event helps answer your questions before you head to the polls.
On Thursday, I had the privilege of celebrating the kick-off of Stebbins Homecoming Weekend at the Parade and Bonfire. I want to send a special shout-out to Stebbins Principal Tina Simpson, who does an amazing job every day for our children. Tina, I am proud to support you and the work you do in our community and honored to call you my friend!
Finally, on Friday, my wife and I attended the Prisoner Of War and Missing In Action Recognition Day ceremony at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It was a solemn and moving event, highlighted by the presentation of the National League of Families POW/MIA Flag and the arrival of a torch that had been passed between active-duty service members in a 24-hour relay leading up to the ceremony. We were deeply moved by the powerful words of Retired U.S. Air Force Captain Guy Gruters, who survived five years as a POW in North Vietnam. His faith in both his country and God is an inspiration—a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who protect our great nation.
