Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute is proud to offer free virtual support groups for cancer patients and caregivers. Support groups provide a confidential, co-ed and nonjudgmental space for patients and their loved ones to find support during their cancer journey. Programs are facilitated by licensed clinical social workers from the FCS Care Coordination team. Real Talk is a group designed to help patients feel less alone and experience joy from connecting with and helping one another. Participants are free to laugh, cry, question and not know the answers — together and without judgment. Meetings are held via Zoom every Wednesday from 2–3 p.m. Eastern. To register, visit FLCancer.com/RealTalk.

Today, nations around the world unite as the 2024 Olympic Games kick-off in Paris. For several athletes, another unifying factor ties them together - their lives being impacted by cancer. Thanks to breakthroughs in treatment, these athletes have had access to the most advanced treatments enabling them to return to the Olympic stage and represent their countries. At FCS, we are proud to be able to offer more clinical trials than any other private oncology practice in Florida and remain a leader in this space worldwide. In fact, the majority of new cancer drugs approved for use in the U.S. were studied in clinical trials with FCS participation, prior to approval. As you watch today's opening ceremonies and the games over the next couple of weeks, we encourage you to learn the stories of these remarkable athletes who have fought for their lives to be able to compete on the world's greatest field. We are pleased to be able to offer a bispecific maintenance therapy program in an outpatient setting. This promising type of immunotherapy is typically administered as an inpatient procedure and requires multiple overnight hospital stays. Now, multiple myeloma patients can opt to receive the same level of care and attention at FCS, close to home and outside of the hospital. Currently, we are offering our advanced cellular therapy maintenance program at our Sarasota Downtown and Winter Park Village locations, with additional sites coming on board with this exciting therapy soon. July is #BoneCancerAwarenessMonth and #SarcomaAwarenessMonth. Sarcoma is a broad, umbrella term for cancer that develops in connective tissues like bone, cartilage, muscle, tendons and blood vessels. A #sarcoma occurs when mesenchymal cells, a type of stem cell in adult tissues, multiply too quickly and grow out of control. According to the American Cancer Society, it is more common for cancer to spread to the bones than for it to begin in the bones. Cancer that starts in the bones is known as primary bone cancer. It is estimated that almost 4,000 new cases of primary bone cancer will be diagnosed in 2024, which includes both children and adults. Because primary bone cancers are rare, researchers have found it more challenging to study the best ways to treat adults. If diagnosed with bone cancer, enrolling in a clinical trial is recommended to have access to the most innovative and promising therapies. Exciting new studies are underway to better understand the genetic changes in bone cancer cells. This research could help develop targeted therapy drugs, which tend to offer fewer side effects than traditional therapies and can be a more personalized, tailored treatment for the specific cancer type. #sarcomaawareness #bonecancerawareness
