#FloridaGLR Director Jenn Faber attended the Business Alliance for Early Learning & Literacy Roundtable, hosted by Makayla Buchanan, MPP of the #FLChamber this morning. Thanks for bringing together local business leaders to discuss workforce impact and employer supports. Always helpful to hear the concerns and interests from the larger business community when discussing early learning!

When her daughter struggled with dyslexia in kindergarten, Sandra Bermudez was told that she was "just a mom," and that there was nothing she could do. So she sold her business, became a fierce advocate for her daughter's educational success, and worked tirelessly so that her daughter could become the honor roll student that she is today. Sandra recently started a nonprofit, The Lucy Project, focused on advocating for science-backed literacy instruction and engaging early reading interventions. The Lucy Project has already seen dramatic success in ensuring that more kindergarteners read at grade level by the end of the year. Sandra's story is a particularly inspiring example of someone translating their own experience as a parent into a wider mission and responsibility to help others. I look forward to seeing The Lucy Project's impact grow in the years to come.

New chronic absence data map from Attendance Works: "Nationwide data from the U.S. Department of Education EdFacts revealed chronic absence nearly doubled, rising from 16% before the pandemic to nearly 30% by 2021-22 school year. The unprecedented levels & intensity of post-pandemic #chronicabsenteeism reflect systemic challenges affecting large numbers of students & families that require programmatic & policy solutions. To best understand how many and which schools are most affected by chronic absence, data can be examined at the state and local levels. Gaining a deeper understanding of the concentration and severity of absenteeism also sheds light on the level of support needed to prevent and address chronic absence. State actions and resources can be used to build awareness of what chronic absence is and how to reduce it. They can advance and sustain district and local action designed to improve attendance and engagement. Our newest blog discusses the critical role of states in reducing chronic absenteeism & features an interactive map from Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins School of Education, with district level chronic absence rates in every state: https://lnkd.in/epMVwdQj " #FloridaGLR #AttendanceMatters
