About us

The Flower Hill Urban Homestead is a celebration of American civil servants, the unsung foundation of our great city and society. By using pieces of the past—including three centuries’ worth of furnishings, textiles, and texts; a gorgeous Texas wildscape, which is home to six historic out-buildings, ponds, and rockeries; and the whole Smoot family story—combined with the Flower Hill Foundation’s unique drive to play an active role in the world today, the Foundation will establish an inclusive space where Austin’s fundamental beliefs are celebrated and a culture of creativity and civic mindfulness is cultivated to take on the challenges of the future. Our Mission: The Flower Hill Foundation exists to honor the late Jane Smoot’s vision to celebrate an Austin founding family of civil servants; preserve one of the city’s last historic homesteads; and empower, inspire, and engage the diverse Austin community of today and tomorrow. Our Vision: The Flower Hill Foundation aims to provide Austin the same services and opportunities the Smoot family did throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the twenty-first. Wherefore, by maintaining a space for individualism, artistic expression, and civic engagement at the Flower Hill Urban Homestead Museum, generations will have the chance to build and project their own future on a piece of Texas history through community, conservation, and the arts. Our Values: At Flower Hill we honor commitment, transparency, reverence, experimentation, and Jane Smoot's family creed to: Eat it all; Use it up; Save it for best; Wear it out; Work to earn; DO WITHOUT.

Every wall tells a story in the Flower Hill Center Dining Room. The vibrant art adorning the space was lovingly painted by the Smoots or gifted by traveling artists who once found solace here. The Smoots offered housing to artists and students in exchange for work on the farm, embodying their unwavering belief in the power of collective effort. Today, we continue to honor that legacy by fostering a sense of togetherness and community spirit. Stop by and see us at Flower Hill Center! Help us keep this tradition alive. #FlowerHillCenter #Community #ArtHistory #CollectiveSpirit #historichomes

Step into the history at Flower Hill Center with us! Our Library was created by Rev. Dr. Richmond Kelly Smoot, who also established the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary School in 1884. We love having a part in the legacy of learning that has shaped Austin’s intellectual landscape. The Smoots were also pioneers in sustainability! Our first-floor bathroom features Austin’s very first porcelain tub, a true gem salvaged from generous neighbors. In a testament to their community spirit, the Smoots insisted on paying $1 for each man who helped carry it to Flower Hill. A bargain at four dollars in total—a steal by today's standards, equivalent to around $85! Join us on a journey through time and heritage at Flower Hill Center, where history meets innovation, and every corner tells a fascinating story. Our next #PeopleSavingPlaces profile is of Natalie George, the Executive Director at the Flower Hill Center. With six years of dedicated service to the Center and over two decades in the performing arts and non-profit sectors, Natalie brings a wealth of experience and passion to historic preservation. Natalie's entrepreneurial flair is evident in her company, Natalie George Productions, which excels in event design, lighting, and artist management. Her approach to preservation embodies the spirit of the Smoot family’s ethos: dream big, work hard, and share generously. "It is an honor to guide the legacy of the Smoot family. Spending time with the past and understanding its importance in our current world is very important to me. With our 150th anniversary approaching in 2027, scaling up our preservation efforts has been on the forefront of my mind. In 2022 we were able to replace our aging roof, 2024 will include the restoration of our historic garage into a multi-use space, and in 2025 we will begin work on the floors and foundations of the home. Accomplishing this amount of restoration in such a short time is imperative and is only possible with great partners like LAS, our contractors, and our community of supporters." 📸#1: Updated roof of the Richmond Kelley Smoot House 📸#2: Pre-Restoration Historic Garage 📸#3: Historic Flower Hill Learn more about Flower Hill Center here: 🔗https://lnkd.in/gtcQekvV #PreservationMonth #HistoricPreservation #LAS
