We’re all drawn to the cannabis industry for different reasons. But it’s our ‘why’ that keeps us persevering. For Alice Moore, a Director of Human Resources from Missouri, its about the opportunity of the industry and believing in the power of the plant. WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL “WHY” (YOUR PASSION) FOR WORKING IN CANNABIS? I’m driven by the opportunity to be a part of something transformative. Cannabis has the power to change lives, not just as a product but as a movement toward openness, healing, and empowerment. I’m here to help the naysayers better understand that this plant and the individuals who work with the plant—from harvest to retail and everything in between—are much more than meets the eye—and to rewrite the story of what it means to be "working in cannabis." WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST SURPRISE(S) ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY?  I thought I’d be navigating just plants, people, and policies, but it turns out I’m also navigating passion and purpose. The biggest surprise has been the sheer intensity of dedication and ingenuity within this industry—people aren’t just in it for the business; they’re in it to build a better future. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN CANNABIS? Stay curious and adaptable—this isn’t your typical 9-to-5. The landscape is constantly shifting, and those who thrive are the ones who can pivot, innovate, and remain passionate in the face of uncertainty. And don’t forget to bring your authenticity—there’s no need for a “business as usual” mask here. WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY, WHAT PERKS AND/OR RISKS DO YOU SEE? Perks: You’re at the frontier of a cultural revolution, and every day is a chance to challenge the status quo. Plus, the networking events are definitely more interesting! Risks: The regulatory rollercoaster can be dizzying, and there’s still stigma to navigate. But the biggest risk is missing out on being part of something groundbreaking by not taking the leap. HOW DO YOU SEE CANNABIS IMPACTING YOUR COMMUNITY? Cannabis is weaving itself into the fabric of the community, not just as an economic booster but as a cultural catalyst. It's opening up dialogues about wellness, justice, and sustainability and giving people new ways to connect and contribute. #thatsmywhy #cannabiscareers #cannabishr

If ballot measures in Florida, North Dakota, and South Dakota pass this November, over half of the U.S. will have access to legal cannabis. According to NORML Political Director Morgan Fox, many of these initiatives are looking promising, with recent polls indicating strong support. Additionally, states like Nebraska, Arkansas, and Oregon are looking to expand medical marijuana access, which could greatly improve healthcare options for patients in need. We’re all drawn to the cannabis industry for different reasons. But it’s our ‘why’ that keeps us persevering. For Otha Smith III, a CEO & Founder from Maryland, it’s about the medicinal properties of the plant and helping others avoid opioids and harmful drugs. WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL “WHY” (YOUR PASSION) FOR WORKING IN CANNABIS? For years, I was prescribed dangerous medications after suffering a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a near-fatal car accident. The opioids I was prescribed left me with nasty side effects, and I knew I needed to find a natural, safer alternative. Cannabis was the answer, cannabis gave me my life back. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST SURPRISE(S) ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY?  Many others, like me, turned to cannabis after growing weary of relying on prescription pills to manage their medical conditions. I've found that most people that work in the industry have a deeply personal, and in some cases, a spiritual connection to the plant. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN CANNABIS? Be yourself, and lead with good intentions. Skills from other industries can definitely transfer over to cannabis. But it’s crucial to understand the real history behind cannabis prohibition. And if you're entering the industry hoping to get rich quick, many will be happy to show you the exit doors. HOW HAS WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY IMPACTED YOUR CANNABIS USE? YOUR PERCEPTION OF THE PLANT? I’m far more intentional with my cannabis use. I no longer judge the quality of cannabis by its THC levels. I look at the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes in the products I choose. #thatsmywhy #careeradvice #cannabiscommunity
