FLOW Lab members have been loving this space so much that following our Governance meetings through the end of the year, we're heading over to Taj M. Smith's Community Support call to be with him in this nurturing conversation. This hour-long Zoom space is a place where social changemakers can find support through the challenges of systemic change. They take place monthly on the last Friday of each month from 3-4 pm EST.

1/3rd of Gen Z get their news from TikTok. And 4 out of 10 top news sources on TikTok’s are individual creators. Why do we care? 1. Because our members are journalists, writers, educators, curators, podcasters and political anaalysts, researchers and content creators that we want you to know about! 2. Because media literacy is important for every human. 3. Because news that is more accessible, trustworthy and relevant will make you a more informed citizen, child, parent, partner, collaborator and friend. 4. Because curated content and access to information lead to action. In order to change the dynamics of our world we need to change the narratives that drive people toact. We ALL need to know the truth in order to change our beliefs that change our behavior. Access to media means we can know the problems, challenges and solutions and act accordingly.
The number one news source on TikTok might surprise you... According to a recent SEMAFOR study, four out of the top 10 news voices on TikTok were individual creators -- not legacy news organizations. So what does this mean for your brand? Your communications strategy should include the top thought leaders in your space, which today often exist outside of big newsrooms. What podcasters, influencers and creators resonate the most with your target customer? You need to build a relationship and trust with these people, in addition to reporters you want to cover your company.

Important Information regarding 23 and Me we all need to be aware of. Please read carefully.
Leadership Development | Training | Content Design | Copywriter | Partner Relationships | Project Management
I, like all the members of FLOWLab⁵; always try to update my community with important information that pertains to our safety. This is an update we all need to pay attention to and aggregate... On Friday, (Oct 4, 2024) Meredith Whittaker, president of encrypted messaging app Signal, joined other security experts who are warning 23andMe users about the privacy danger. “It's not just you. If anyone in your FAMILY gave their DNA to 23andMe, for all of your sakes, close your/their account now,” Whittaker tweeted. #TogetherWeCan #TogetherWeWill #NeverStop

We love a good practice to focus on our strengths and wins. We love it even more when our community likes it so much they start sharing it monthly, too. Naomi Raquel Enright, Linda Berberich, PhD and Sharon Hurley Hall (she/her) have some great September reflections; they DOING the work. The next time you think, “ I got nothing done this week,” write out all of the things that you did this week, including self-care, domestic labor, childcare, “work-work” or creative time. A nap is an accomplishment to be celebrated. That is all. And join us the last Tuesday of every month for open Office Hours—and take time to celebrate your life in our monthly writing prompt: “WTF did I even do this month?” Register via link in comments.
In our FLOWLab⁵ meeting on Tuesday, we were asked to write down our “wins” - across the board - for September. After reading Sharon Hurley Hall (she/her)’s post sharing her list, I am inspired to do the same. In September, I: *Confirmed my 5 student teachers for this semester and already completed my first Observations of 4 of them. *Created a document listing the high schools my son is applying to, along with their various requirements. *Scheduled high school tours, three of which took place this week, and where I ran into folks I know from various parts of my life. *Met with the high school placement counselor and had my son’s last middle school Curriculum Night. *Sat on a panel for prospective families at my son’s middle school. *Went viral with my letter to the editor of The New Yorker and expanded my LinkedIn network. *Heard from more readers of my book, one of whom told me, “It's wonderful, inspirational, awesome storytelling!! I love it!” *Read 5 novels. *Published 2 blogs. I appreciate this practice. Too often I feel that I am not working hard enough, not producing enough. This list reminds me that I am. It also feels significant to share on Rosh Hashanah, which every single one of my paternal ancestors observed. Shanah Tovah. May this new year bring the much needed peace and justice we all deserve.

If remote work is finally possible for a huge swath of the population and for many types of jobs, why is it that businesses continue to force people back to the office? Corporate surveillance paired with a lack of trust for employees. They ignore the data is clear that most people want to work and do work very hard. RTW (return to work) is poorly named. It’s RTO—return to office and irl, which is not equitable at all. It’s worse for certain people, and they know that. RTO doesn’t consider what works best for different types of bodies and brains nor do they consider what works for caregivers. We need and deserve options! We don’t want to opt out of the workforce. We want to be a force for good, and a force for change. If you want to learn more about how we’re making work Accessible to ALL, come to office hours and check out our brand new site! Flowlab5.org
Founder, Writer, Social Entrepreneur, Creative Ops, Biz Dev, and Content Strategy Consultant, working to achieve gender parity+ inclusion one business at a time.
Despite what corporate CEOs want or micromanaging, small business owners, the data is clear. The majority of us want to work wherever we want. We don’t want to be forced to the office. But what’s more, is we don’t need to be forced to the office. Productivity and engagement, the two things good managers should actually care about, both go up when people work remotely. The ideal benefit is seen when we work at least 3 to 4 days a week remote. This isn’t news either. People like myself have been advocating for flexible work, remote work, and work from home since the 90s. They say the number one reason people leave their jobs is their boss, and the number one reason people stay is a good manager. But I don’t know that these studies are fully comprehensive or our surveying all identities/demographics. Research needs to be done to measure how many entrepreneurs left full-time W-2 employment for self-employment due to the need to work from home. I know for the community I run, and the clients I have, as well as the broader community, working for yourself was there only viable option. This could be due to many factors, but specifically affectspeople with disabilities, neurodivergent people, and people with chronic illnesses. Those who seem work from home often do because it’s the only way to make work *work.* It’s on all of us to make sure we make remote work possible for EVERYONE and make sure entrepreneurship is accessible to everyone. If you’re curious about how to make it work, or you’re considering the leap to entrepreneurship or a side gig, come check out FLOWLab. Office hours, every Tuesday, at 3 PM EST/12pm PST, w/ my brilliant cohost Kara Smith. Today we’ll be talking about ADHD and managing change with member Jenn McFarland. Links ⬇️
