Did you know that plumbing poverty isn’t just an issue in low- and middle-income countries, but also in wealthy nations like the US? 🛠️💧 Our Associate Lena Musoka, MPH, MSc wrote an insightful blog exploring the significant sanitation challenges in the US, focusing on the situation in the State of Oklahoma. 🚽🚰 Even though the US is one of the richest countries in the world, access to essentials like flush toilets and clean water is far from equal. Many communities that are racial or ethnic minorities and/or low-income lack proper plumbing facilities. 💧 In Oklahoma City alone, despite its strong economic outlook, 1.2% of households in low-income neighborhoods live without indoor plumbing, which indicates hundreds to thousands of families. Outside the city, Oklahoma is also home to some of the largest amounts of plumbing poverty amongst indigenous communities.🛑 Read the full blog to learn more about plumbing poverty in Oklahoma and discover what can be done to address this critical issue: https://lnkd.in/dMQHVrQv #PlumbingPoverty #Plumbing #Inequality #Sanitation #Oklahoma #Toilets

🚨 Big News Alert – an argument over combined sewer regulations is headed to the Supreme Court! Its outcome could set a new standard for managing sewer systems in the U.S. ⚖️💧 San Francisco is suing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for setting unclear rules about how much sewage local wastewater treatment and collection facilities can release into the ocean. The lawsuit claims that, despite the city investing billions in infrastructure to meet Clean Water Act requirements, the federal standards are too vague, making compliance impossible. The court's decision might reshape regulations for combined sewer systems across the U.S., potentially prescribing new management practices and limits on pollution discharge. 🌊 The result could have a huge impact on public health and the environment. Read more about the situation via the link and stay tuned to see how this unfolds! 🌿⚖️ - https://lnkd.in/gU_Hmtzs #Sewers #CombinedSewers #EnvironmentalJustice #SupremeCourt #Sustainability

A friendly reminder from FLUSH: don't forget to make time in your busy schedule to prioritize self-care! 🙌 August is #NationalWellnessMonth, so be sure to celebrate it by putting your body and mind first. 💆🧘 For many, self-care starts with WASH: taking showers and baths, doing skincare, and more — these refreshing routines are just a few forms of basic hygiene. 🚿🛁 But such practices remain unavailable for much of the U.S. population whose living situation doesn't provide access to basic hygiene services. 🚫🚰 Check out our recent blog post, co-written by Kimberly Worsham, MPA, MIWM (FLUSH Founder), Ashley Voisinet & Genevieve Mancuso, P.E. (Public Hygiene Lets Us Stay Human (PHLUSH)), and Terence Lester, Ph.D. (Love Beyond Walls), where we rethink societal approaches to hygiene in the U.S. and advocate for centering the overall human need for wellness as its driving purpose - https://lnkd.in/eUfmudU9. #Hygiene #PublicHygiene #PublicHealth #Wellness #Equity

Have you ever questioned your own memory, thinking suspiciously, "I could've sworn I used to buy toilet paper way less often a couple of years ago"?😑🧻 You're not imagining things—it's all due to toilet paper shrinkflation. 🤓☝️ The rolls keep getting smaller as companies continue to release new versions with fewer sheets, lighter weights, and reduced sizes.📉 For instance, a Charmin regular roll has only 56 sheets in 2024, compared to 650 in 1974. Even today's "Double" and "Mega" packs don't come close to the number of sheets in regular rolls from the 1970s. Learn more about how the sizes of toilet paper have decreased over the years and why companies are doing this without facing real legal consequences in this article (thanks Jennifer Barr, PhD, MPH for the find): https://lnkd.in/eNaVwzEH

As you know, FLUSH's team is a true fan of #ToiletTourism. We also enjoy virtual tours of museums! The Thomas Crapper Loo Museum, home to an impressive private collection of antique toilets, washbasins, baths, and taps is opening its doors for the last time for buyers.💔 Assembled by Simon Kirby, the former owner of Thomas Crapper & Co., the entire collection is now up for sale, with offers at Salvo Ltd Truly Reclaimed ™ starting at over £300,000. It includes more than 1,200 rare items, which would be nearly impossible to assemble today. 🛁 Sadly, Kirby may have to split the collection and sell it off piece by piece - any buyers?! The National Poo Museum, The Crossness Engines Trust? 👀 Watch the recently released, never-before-seen video tour of the museum via this link: https://lnkd.in/eiPZyBrU. We invite you to spread the word to keep this impressive one-of-a-kind collection intact by finding its new owner. 🤝💼 #ToiletHistory #Toilets #Museum #Sanitation

If you need more proof that wastewater pollution of the oceans is a serious threat to ecosystems and the economy, hear from the blue crabbers of Baltimore, Maryland, who have spoken out about wastewater dumping and its impact on local marine life. 🌊🦀 The sewage problem in the area is huge. In total, 66 large wastewater treatment plants discharge into the Chesapeake Bay, directly harming the species living there and making the water inhabitable.🐠 ❌ In addition to raising environmental concerns, the sewage issue causes the fishing industry to decline rapidly, as blue crabbers can attest.📉 See more in a recent article by Carli Stewart on National Fisherman - https://lnkd.in/eKdDSZUp. If you are curious about the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the coastal US and want to learn more about how sewage affects other forms of marine life, especially shellfish, check out our blog post where we shared insights from last year's market research project FLUSH worked on with the Ocean Sewage Alliance: https://lnkd.in/g9hAjq5r 🐚🔍 #MarineConservation #OceanPollution #Sewage #Wastewater #Fisheries #Aquaculture

When using a public restroom, do you usually go to the furthest cubicle, thinking it's the least used? 🚻 Many of us have the same habit. But here is an interesting twist: research shows that the first toilet stall is actually the cleanest!💡🧼 Next time you find yourself in a public restroom, break the habit and choose the first cubicle to avoid potential infections. 😎 For more details, check out this article: https://lnkd.in/gTvweXTB. #PublicRestroom #PublicToilet #Toilets #ToiletTalk #Hygiene
