Today in History: October 29, ‘Black Tuesday’ signals start of Great Depression. Most people think October 29, 1929—Black Tuesday—was the market's one-day crash, but it marked just the start of years of decline. That day, a record 16 million shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange, and billions vanished as stocks collapsed. Panic spread globally, pushing the world deeper into the Great Depression. The crash, driven by speculative bubbles, excessive debt, and a shaky economy, saw the market lose about 80% of its value by 1932. Recovery was slow, and it would take World War II to pull America fully out of the Depression. Photo Credit: Bettmann Archive/Getty Images #economy #debt #stocks #markets #investing

ETFs as Hedge Funds 2.0: A Better Way to Capture Beta and Alpha? New article from Aptus Capital Advisors https://lnkd.in/eW6Sbf4U "In today’s market environment, fixed income has struggled as both a return driver and a diversifier. ETFs that incorporate both alpha and beta exposures offer a modern alternative, moving beyond the traditional “cash plus” strategy of many liquid alternatives. These dynamic ETFs provide greater return potential while preserving desired risk characteristics, all at a fraction of the cost of hedge funds." #hedgefunds. #liquidalts

History rhymes as gold breaks out from Brobdingnagian base… https://lnkd.in/eWDZ5Jvt "Gold is starting to come on the radar for more and more people (after rallying some 60% off the October 2022 low), with financial pundits, hedge fund billionaires, and even mainstream media starting to talk louder about the shiny metal. But what’s gold got going for it anyway? And after rallying more than 30% YTD, has gold got anything left in the tank — are we too late?" #gold

Unconventional Economic Indicators: The Hemline Index. Did you know fashion trends can correlate with economic cycles? The Hemline Index suggests that skirt lengths tend to rise or fall along with stock prices. Shorter skirts are often seen in prosperous times, while longer hemlines are linked to economic downturns, like after the 1929 Wall Street Crash. This Fall’s return of the micro-mini skirt, blending grunge and femininity, is an interesting reflection of current market sentiment. In 1947, computer pioneer Grace Hopper and her team were working on the Mark Il computer at Harvard University when they encountered a malfunction. Upon investigation, they discovered that a moth had become stuck in one of the computer's relays, causing an error. The team removed the moth and recorded the incident in their logbook, referring to it as the "first actual case of a bug being found." This event led to the popularization of the term "debugging" to describe the process of identifying and fixing issues or errors in computer systems, even though the term had been used informally before. Today, "bugs" in software don't usually involve real insects, but the term endures as a reminder of that quirky moment in computing history! #technology #computers #ai #history
