The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan & our 700+ Hunger Relief Partners work to end hunger in 22 Michigan counties.

About us

The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan was founded in 1981 as a grassroots community organization serving agencies in Genesee County. Since, due to increasing need for our services around the state, the Food Bank has grown to serve a network of more than 700 Hunger Relief Partners, including partner agencies, schools, and other community organizations. Once food arrives at the Food Bank, it is sorted, inspected, and made available to partner agencies such as churches, soup kitchens, and food pantries to distribute to those in need. All Food Bank partner agencies are required to distribute food, without charges or fees, to needy clients. The Food Bank also partners with schools who distribute food through our Backpack Program and School Pantry Program and provides meals during our Summer Feeding Program. The Food Bank serves more than 330,000 families through our partner agencies per year and distributes more than 28 million pounds of food, including 11 million pounds of fresh produce annually. Through our network of partners that includes retail grocery chains and farmers, the Food Bank is able to maximize monetary donations. As little as $1 can provide up to six meals for people in need. To donate, visit www.fbem.org. The Food Bank offers volunteer opportunities in our Hunger Solution Center Monday-Saturday for individuals or groups. In one hour, one volunteer can sort enough food to feed 335 people! For information about volunteering, visit www.fbem.org or contact (810) 396-0210.

  • Happy 10-4 (also known as National Trucker Appreciation Day)! Today, we thank the incredible truck drivers who keep us rolling. Their incredible dedication to our mission ensures that food reaches families in need across eastern Michigan. Without their hard work and commitment, the Food Bank wouldn't be able to deliver vital support to the communities who depend on it. Thank you to all the truckers out there for keeping our shelves stocked and our mission moving forward! 🙌💙 #ThankATrucker #FeedingEasternMichigan #TruckerAppreciationDay

  • Every year from September 15 to October 15, Americans honor National Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizing the rich histories, diverse cultures, and contributions of U.S. citizens with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. We at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan wish to recognize all the hardworking individuals in the Hispanic community who helped make a difference in the fight against hunger. Take César Chávez, for instance. As a labor leader and civil rights activist, César worked tirelessly to improve the conditions of farmworkers, many of whom are Hispanic. He understood that hunger and food insecurity were common issues among agricultural workers, and he organized strikes and boycotts to demand better wages, access to basic necessities, and humane treatment, which ultimately helped reduce hunger in marginalized communities. César also cofounded the National Farm Workers Association, which later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to become the United Farm Workers labor union. Thank you, Mr. Chávez, for all you've done in the fight against hunger.
