🧡 This November, join us and the American Heart Association of Kansas City in making a meaningful impact on our community by donating heart-healthy and nourishing foods to local food pantries! Access to nourishing, heart-healthy options is essential for everyone, yet it's often limited for families relying on pantry support. We can improve health equity and help families thrive by choosing items that support health. 🍎🥦🥫 https://lnkd.in/g69Bmc3s

Fighting for nutrition security and health equity for all.
About us
Food Equality Initiative (FEI) has enjoined tackling food insecurity with the food is medicine movement, or the belief that food plays a role in sustaining health, preventing disease, and as a therapy for those with conditions responsive to changes in diet. This belief is twofold. First, food is an important tool used to address medical conditions such as food allergies, celiac disease, diabetes, and other cardiometabolic diseases. Secondly, food can also prevent illness and improve overall health through the regular consumption of nutritious food (nutrition security). Since inception, more than 400 households have been nourished by FEI and permitted access to health and the dignity of choice. Food Equality Initiative (FEI) fights for nutrition security and health equity by increasing access to nourishing food as medicine for those at the intersection of food insecurity and a diet-treated illness in three main ways. First, by improving access to nourishing food through its Food Is Medicine Access Program (FIMAP). Secondly, educational resources fortify understanding of leading a healthy life and inform the general public about the challenges that exist for traditionally underrepresented groups to access food as medicine. Finally, by advocating for traditionally under-represented populations in healthcare by supporting projects and legislation that expand health equity and drive systematic change for those that are food insecure.

Today, we celebrate Food is Medicine Day. FEI started this day three years ago to raise awareness that access to and education about nutritious food can reduce medical costs and improve overall health for under-resourced families and individuals. Together, we can remedy this food crisis by focusing on getting people the nutrient-dense food that is the medicine they need. We are thrilled to have the support of our partners here in Kansas City and to be part of a group of organizations working hard to bring health equity to all. Tell us, what are you doing to celebrate Food is Medicine Day? #foodismedicine #kcmo #healthequity #kck

Did you know that September 14th is Food as Medicine Day? Food as medicine means using nutritious, whole foods to prevent, manage, and even treat health conditions. It’s the idea that what we eat can play a key role in improving our overall health, supporting the body’s natural healing processes, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Simply put, food can be a powerful tool for better health! FEI works to improve access to the nourishing foods people need each and every day! We invite you to support our work this September. We can't do it without you! https://lnkd.in/giTwKN7N

The end of summer holidays brings about a flurry of back-to-school preparations. However, families dealing with food allergies face an added layer of complexity during this period. As we approach the start of a new academic year, the concern is not just about school supplies or new uniforms, but also about ensuring safety in a school environment for children with food allergies.

To this day, I still remember having to sit at the 'allergy lunch table' during primary and middle school. Looking back on the experience now, with seven years distancing me from it and a new perspective and insights with regard to my food allergies, I thought it'd be interesting to go back and analyze the insight I gained from it. I hope this article can be a guide for you when deciding if your child with food allergies should sit at the 'allergy table' or the 'regular lunch tables' this upcoming school year.
