If food could talk, it would tell you a story of hidden costs. We gave it a voice. We support the shift to sustainable food systems by developing a methodology to measure externalities in climate, biodiversity & health throughout the food value chain. 🎥👉 https://lnkd.in/g_5Pudtp Wageningen University & Research | AKI - Institute of Agricultural Economics | APRE - Agenzia per la Promozione della Ricerca Europea | COPA COGECA | Danone | ECOZEPT | INRAE | LOBA | Aarhus BSS - Aarhus University | MVO Nederland | PEDAL Consulting | RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment | SLU - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences | Sustainable AG Unternehmensberatung | Universidad de Almería | Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm | Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna | The University of Bonn | UCLouvain - Université catholique de Louvain | University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca | ZLTO | OPTA Europe | Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford

About us
Welcome to FOODCoST 👋🏼, a 4-year project funded by the Horizon Europe Framework Programme under GA 101060481! 🍎 FOODCoST aims to support the transition towards sustainable food systems by proposing a harmonising methodology to calculate externalities in climate, biodiversity, environment, society and health along the food value chain. The overall concept of FOODCoST is based on a stakeholder platform that ensures a multi-actor approach and supports three main pillars: Valuation; Internalisation; Impact. ➕ Learn more about our primary objectives and get to know us better on our website!

Great to see such inspiring exchanges happening in Almería! 🇪🇸 The visit from FAO and University of East Sarajevo colleagues provided a valuable opportunity to share insights on 🌾 sustainable agriculture and 💲 cost-effective food systems. We’re proud that FOODCoST was part of these discussions 💬, contributing to the dialogue on true cost accounting in food production. 🚜 Collaborative efforts like these drive us towards a more resilient and sustainable food system. 🤝 Looking forward to continuing this journey together! 🫡
Yesterday we were presenting at CIT COEXPHAL to visiting colleagues from FAO and University of East Sarajevo the Almería model of agriculture and cooperatives and some of the projects currently implemented within the Chair of Horticulture, Cooperatives and Sustainable Development at Universidad de Almería. I had the pleasure to present the Horizon Europe Project FOODCoST in which the University of Almería together with other 21 partners from 13 EU countries are conducting research to redefine the value of food through methodologies, policies, and business models that point towards sustainable production and consumption in the food system. We had the opportunity to visit some of the impressive innovations related to sustainable agriculture develop by Almeria's farmers working with Cooperativa Vicasol and COEXPHAL #sustainableagriculture #cooperatives Valentina Jug Cynthia Giagnocavo Nikola Kukrić Grujica Vico Rosa María Heredia Hortigüela Hala El Moussaoui

We are delighted to announce that FAO’s The State of Food and Agriculture 2024 report is officially released! 🎉 This year’s theme, “Value-driven transformation of agrifood systems,” reflects the critical need for change in how we approach agriculture and food sustainability. Key Messages from #SOFA2024: ▫️ Hidden Costs: The report refines hidden cost estimates from SOFA 2023 using updated data from 156 countries. Findings reveal a staggering $12 trillion in hidden costs (in 2020 PPP), underscoring the need for systemic transformation within agrifood systems. ▫️ Unhealthy Dietary Patterns: Unhealthy dietary patterns constitute 70% of global hidden costs. To inform policy action, SOFA 2024 breaks these costs down into 13 dietary risk factors. The report identifies low consumption of whole grains and fruits and overconsumption of sodium as particularly significant areas for intervention. ▫️ Agrifood System Analysis: Recognising that different agrifood systems face unique challenges, the report categorises hidden costs across six types: protracted crisis, traditional, expanding, diversifying, formalising, and industrial. Industrial and diversifying systems are found to generate the highest global hidden costs, predominantly in health. ▫️ Social Hidden Costs: Most social hidden costs linked to poverty and undernourishment arise in traditional and protracted crisis systems, where hidden costs represent 47% and 23% of their GDP, respectively. ▫️ Tailored Strategies: This diversity highlights the necessity for tailored strategies that respond to each system's unique challenges. SOFA 2024 provides in-depth case studies at various levels to support this approach. ▫️ Stakeholder Engagement: Inclusive stakeholder consultations are crucial for guiding effective interventions and addressing power imbalances within the agricultural landscape. Collaborative and value-driven actions are key to enhancing the societal value of our agrifood systems, benefiting both current and future generations. Explore the SOFA webpage to access the full report in English and the In Brief version in all six UN languages (AR, EN, ES, FR, RU, ZH). Discover our Interactive Story and country-specific data for an immersive experience. Don't miss the SOFA 2024 Press Release for more insights! 💭 Visit here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dxXdx8PV
