Bob Hines is our King of Philadelphia! He is our fantastic boots on the ground leader in Philadelphia and surrounding areas. Bob is always looking for a way to serve his community, he started volunteering with us after he had been bringing food and supplies to organizations throughout Kensington. He goes above and beyond to come up with new ways to spread the word about FoodRecovery.org. Behind the scenes, Bob reaches out to donors across the Philly Metro Area and helps coordinate donation pick-ups with our fantastic team of drivers. We couldn’t do our work in Philadelphia without Bob Hines!

The truck driver had to get to his next delivery, so he planned on throwing all this perfectly good produce in a landfill. Isn't that just bananas? Luckily, we stepped in and rescued this rejected load and donated everything to the amazing nonprofit, JEE Foods, in Hamilton, Ohio where it was distributed to community members in need. We even got the driver unloaded in 15 minutes so he could get to his next load on time!

Let's reduce waste together. Learn more about understanding food labels below! 👇 "Best By": This indicates when a product will be at its peak quality, not when it becomes unsafe. Many foods are perfectly fine to eat weeks or even months past this date. "Sell By": This is actually for stores, not consumers. It helps with inventory management but doesn't mean the food is bad after this date. Products are often good for days or weeks after. "Use By": While this sometimes relates to food safety, it's mostly about quality. For most foods, this date indicates when the manufacturer believes the product will be at its best, not when it becomes unsafe to eat. There are over 40 different ways companies print labels on their products. Except for baby formula, no label is regulated by FDA requirements, and often those dates are simply to ensure quality. Best course of action? Use your sense to decide before tossing food.

Tim from CSPNJ said it best, "Awesome shows and good deeds"! On Saturday, July 20th, Freedom Mortgage Pavilion donated over 200 pounds of leftover food from a Dave Matthews Band show! Our partner, Tim at CSPNJ, was able to enjoy the show and bring the leftover food to CSPNJ's Camden location. Thank you Freedom Mortgage Pavilion for the fantastic donation!

🍌 Happy Food Recovery Friday 🍌 We recovered 28,000 pounds of bananas! These bananas were headed to a landfill, but instead we donated them to Rick Caywood Ministries in Woodway, Texas to be distributed to communities on the US-Mexico border!
