Sometimes there is great serendipity in investing. Several years ago, Foothill Ventures invested in xMEMS for their pioneering solid state speaker innovation. We believe that speakers will follow microphones and get completely disrupted by MEMS devices. At the same time, we have been looking for cooling solutions for chips-- thermal dissipation is one of the key bottlenecks to the AI revolution. It is therefore fantastic that xMEMS technology actually provides a world-leading cooling solution (in addition to the world's best sounding, smallest speakers). Creative engineering leaders make fantastic CEOs. Nice work, Joseph Jiang https://lnkd.in/gNnyesdY

Nice demo from Jacobi Robotics on automating complex palletizing environments. The robots are coming! Jacob
Existing palletizing solutions excel at stacking boxes in open spaces, but when it comes to roller cages, gaylord boxes, and other containers, it’s a different story, disrupting existing processes and making automation challenging. With Jacobi, palletizing with roller cages and other containers becomes as easy as simple pallets. Our software automatically creates robot movements that avoid collisions and optimize cycle times. Commissioning is completed in hours instead of weeks, and adding new box patterns takes minutes. If your operations face these automation challenges, let’s talk about how we can help streamline your process. https://lnkd.in/guMdK4uq

Sustainable Aviation Fuel ("SAF") is a big piece of the puzzle on how the world lowers its carbon footprint. We are thrilled to be an investor in Aether Fuels, and both of these milestones are significant. Signing a milestone with JetBlue (and having the support of JetBlue Ventures' Ryan Chou, who is fantastic) AND bringing Eni Next on board are both huge. We are super thankful to Phil Inagaki at Xora Innovation for incubating this, and introducing to us! Conor Madigan is among the best entrepreneurs that we've encountered, and the company is knocking down milestones left and right. Watch this space. This isn't a surprise, but it is news that the next escalation in the global EV war is now here: the US DoE is investing $3B in battery technology innovators in the US (including $125M for Foothill portfolio company Ascend Elements). The effective barring of Chinese EVs from the US market is also a strong move; China may retaliate against US auto makers in China, where Tesla is especially vulnerable (as China is its 2nd largest market). As always, fantastic reporting from The Information's Steve LeVine

We have a one-two US strike at China's EV and battery dominance. In a new round of grants, the US hit the heart of the China EV Playbook with a concentrated, $3 billion bet on 25 companies in the key battery midstream. And today, the Commerce Department proposed an effective ban on Chinese EVs with a rule barring Chinese "connected" vehicles. The Electric. https://lnkd.in/eDf6rsUx

Foothill Ventures invests in a lot of battery companies-- we have a strong interest in understanding the future of this industry. Anyone interested in learning should listen to Robin Zeng, CEO/ Founder of CATL. THEN, read the full-set of take-aways below from TDK Ventures' Qianran (Katherine) He, PhD (small secret: we never make a battery related investment without running it by Katherine first... she's amazing)
Investor at TDK Ventures ($350M AUM) | Investing in fundamental sciences changing our future | Cleantech and Energy Transformation; Managing Director @ Volta Foundation
Super inspiring and insightful interview featuring Robin Zeng, the founder and CEO of the world’s largest battery manufacturer #CATL. He pointed out many fact and truth that we always overlooked. Here are my key takeaways from what he shared: 👨🎓 #Talents: China has >50 battery graduate programs in universities, which contributes to 20,000 engineers and 700 PhDs are driving innovation at CATL. While in the US, #finance and #AI, are much more attractive than #electrochemistry, and there are very few "battery/electrochemistry" graduate programs available for talent reserve. 🏭 #Manufacturing: Why US and Europe constantly failed on scaling up battery manufacturing: Horrible but true facts --- US and European Battery Manufacturing use the wrong #design, wrong #process, wrong #equipment, with all mistakes are together, there is no way to success. 🔋 #Innovations: Solid-state batteries (#SSB) are still in the early stages of development (TRL 4), with significant fundamental scientific and technical hurdles (solid-solid interface). In contrast, #sodium-ion batteries are maturing and CATL's Gen-2 sodium-ion batteries will replace 20-30% of #LFP batteries. ⛏ #Supplychain: As battery chemistry progresses, the need for critical minerals kept changing. Example of the demand of #Cobalt usage in a battery has dropped from 33% to only 3%, or even Cobalt-free in LFP chemistry. The pursuit of critical battery metals need to follow the next generation of new chemistries and cell design. ⚡ #ESS: Energy Storage Systems (#ESS) has a huge potential market (almost half of the transportation), it looks easy but actually still faces significant design challenges, particularly in the #system level with the GWh scale of components product and consistency control. Still optimistic to see a lot of changes are happening to address the challenges we have. 👉 Heard from prof. Shirley Meng that more universities and community colleague programs are now designed for battery and electrochemistry training to feed the talent need, with Volta Foundation also contributing a lot on battery talent support; 👉 Big shout out to TDK Ventures portfolio companies like AM Batteries innovating new platform of dry electrode coating to leapfrog existing LIB manufacturing; 👉 Same proud to Novalith addressing the real #critical mineral #lithium to feed the growing demand with the lowest cost and carbon footprint of lithium; 👉 And for Na-ion battery innovators like Peak Energy, UNIGRID Battery, Standard Potential Co., Robin's interview provided the strongest reference for anyone spreading doubts about the sodium-ion technology maturity and potential. Replacing LFP is not the end goal, but to provide a cheaper, safer, and better energy storage solution for the world! 🌱🤝🌍 Anil Achyuta Eric Rosenblum Yan Wang Lie Shi Cameron Dales Landon Mossburg Liam O'Connor Steven V. The global dance between Self-Driving car platforms and ride share platforms is entering the next phase. At first, Uber and Lyft were developing their own platforms. Then, they abandoned these efforts when they became too expensive, and the time-to-market slipped into the future. It seemed that the balance of power would shift as soon as Waymo and WeRide were ready to "hit the road" (so to speak), and their operating costs would be far lower than Uber and Lyft , which would get disrupted. Not so fast! Controlling a large 2 sided marketplace is non-trivial, and WeRide and Waymo now find it valuable to be on Uber's platform. This will be one of the more interesting strategic games to watch in the next 5-10 years.
We feel excited to share that today WeRide, and Uber, the world’s largest mobility and delivery technology platform, announced a strategic partnership to bring WeRide’s autonomous vehicles onto the Uber platform, beginning in the #UnitedArabEmirates. 🇦🇪The partnership is expected to launch first in #AbuDhabi later this year. 📱After launch, riders may be presented with the option of #WeRide #Robotaxi when requesting a qualifying ride on the #Uber app. WeRide currently operates the largest robotaxi fleet in the UAE, where residents can access its services through the TXAI app. In July 2023, WeRide was granted the UAE’s first and only national license for self-driving vehicles, enabling it to test and operate its autonomous vehicles on public roads across the entire country. #autonomousdriving #urbantransportation

HyperLight is entering a new phase of growth with this round of investment, led by Summit Partners. There has been a lot of attention paid to advances in compute power for AI-centric workloads. Less attention has been paid to the need for blazing fast, power efficient networking. HyperLight has pioneered a fundamental breakthrough using thin film lithium niobate ("TFLN"). This skips forward over multiple generations of networking speeds with much lower energy consumption. It is especially great to welcome Peter Chung (who invested in E-TEK Dynamics, Finisar Corporation, MACOM and other successful photonics companies). Huge congratulations to founder/ CEO Mian Zhang on this milestone! (tagging Phil Inagaki, Reed Sturtevant, Marko Loncar) https://lnkd.in/eTrbhB5b
