If preservation isn’t possible, the next tier of our Well-Being Support Ecosystem is recruiting and retaining #IdealFamilyPlacements. But what makes a placement “ideal”, and why does it matter? The most ideal placement is #KinshipCare. A kinship placement keeps the child with their relatives and maintains important familial relationships. In cases where kinship isn’t available, the next best ideal placement is a #FosterFamily within the child's neighborhood. Keeping kids close to home minimizes the trauma of removal, as their surroundings, school, friends, and cultural connections remain the same. One of the most effective and crucial ways to end the #ChildWelfare crisis is family preservation and reunification. In both cases, many families could stay together or reunify quicker if they receive the help they need promptly. Yet many families don't know what resources are available, and organizations often don't communicate with each other to wrap around families holistically. Paul Chapman is the director of Restore Hope, one of our partners making significant waves in solving those very problems. We may not be biologists, but we know a thing or two about ecosystems. In an ecosystem, the environment and its organisms work together to thrive. When functioning properly, an ecosystem sustains itself and heals itself. We believe ecosystems are God's design for the world, and similarly, each family and community are ecosystems unto themselves. If each piece of the family unit and surrounding community operates as it should, the whole community becomes self-sustaining. But in too many cases, it’s not, and vulnerable children are paying the price. We’re excited to introduce our Well-Being Support Ecosystem, our bold approach to end the child welfare crisis. It consists of 3 key focus areas: preservation and reunification; recruiting and retaining ideal family placements; and community empowerment. It's that time of year again! School is back in session, and while some children are excited to see their friends, children in #FosterCare may be anxious. Kids in foster care bounce between 3-4 different homes on average. Social workers and judges try to keep them within their original school district, but that often isn't possible due to limited foster homes. While any child may struggle to adjust to a #NewSchool, major changes like this become even more difficult for kids in foster care. In our blog, we look at the challenges of starting a new school for kids in foster care and how to support their transition. Fans who donated to For Others at the #NEEDTOBREATHE #CavesWorldTour (which was awesome) were entered into a drawing to win a Martin guitar signed by the band members. The winner of the guitar was randomly selected, but as we know, nothing is ever truly random. When we contacted the winner, Chris, it became immediately apparent that his family was special. After a lengthy battle, Chris and his family recently finalized their daughter's adoption, a topic we're very passionate about. Chris graciously shared their story with us and agreed to let us share it with you. We’re so thankful and amazed at this miraculous connection! When young adults age out of the #fostercare system (transition-aged youth), most enter into chronic poverty immediately. With limited financial resources, educational opportunities, and support systems, these young adults face navigating the daunting path of independence alone.
