Veterans make up approximately 8% of the workforce in the energy sector, which is higher than the national average of about 5%. Recruitment efforts like #NationalHireAVeteranDay showcase the valuable transfer of military occupational specialties (MOS) to civilian roles within the industry. Skills honed in the military, such as a safety-first mindset, adaptability and critical thinking, align with the technical and soft skill requirements of the energy sector, fostering successful career transitions for veterans. “Veterans bring so many skills to the team on Day One. The core values engrained by all branches of service include loyalty, duty, respect, honor, selfless service, commitment and personal courage. These are traits every leader wants from members of their team,” says Ben Doyle, senior project manager, renewal development, and founding member of BHE Renewables VETRN employee resource group. #RenewableEnergyCareers #EmployeeResourceGroups

How do you inspire the next generation? The Pi515 Smart Cities summer program challenges high school students to explore ways to make urban living more sustainable and efficient using advanced technologies. In five weeks, students research, learn from industry experts and pitch solutions to address real-world problems. Faith Burroughs, solar operations performance engineer, and Grace An Nguyen, wind operations intern, delivered a guest lecture on education and career goals in engineering, renewable energy and their professional experiences at BHE Renewables. Pi515, a Des Moines area nonprofit, is committed to empowering underrepresented youth with STEM education for more equitable representation in STEM fields today. Thank you, Faith and Grace, for representing the future of sustainability and engineering!
A big thank you to BHE Renewables for visiting our Smart Cities class to discuss renewable energy. Our students gained valuable knowledge about sustainability in Iowa and explored some career opportunities in this field. #Pi515 #sustainability #renewableenergy #iowa #smartcities
