About us
The True Charity Initiative exists to champion a national movement of voluntarily sourced, effective charity at the most local level. What is True Charity? It's actualized. Real charity makes a real difference. Some good or service is rendered to the poor, and outcomes are measured to ensure the efforts are actually making a difference in the community. It's accurate. If charity doesn't empower the poor, it misses the mark. Empowerment is impossible without some aspect of challenge to help a person become self-sufficient. It's authentic. True charity stems from compassion and cannot be legislated. Government is an institution and cannot be charitable in truth. True charities are privately funded.

"Compassion was compelling us, but it was resulting in a form of charity that was not very effective," says James Whitford, founder of the True Charity Network. "In fact, it really was trapping some people in a type of dependency." True Charity Initiative members believe government payments are often not tailored to individual needs and so provide little incentive for people to improve their lives. Members argue their requirements force accountability among charity recipients and result in a deeper relationship with caseworkers. They disagree with left-leaning nonprofits built around the idea that work and service requirements are demeaning and punitive and that case management can be overbearing and paternalistic. True Charity believes poverty should be addressed compassionately by private, local groups where relationships are built. We're putting these core values into practice through training, tools, and education. As our VP of Education, Bethany Herron leads these educational efforts. She creates informational materials that equip individuals and organizations with life-changing practices. She shares, "We have the honor of serving those who serve. I love knowing that every hour I invest creates margin for our network members to make a greater impact through their ministries." She loves the collaboration made possible through the True Charity Network. Bethany says, "Where else can compassionate people from diverse organizations unite to impact lives? I've sat in a room with a blend of people from churches, pregnancy care centers, foster care alternatives, addiction recovery programs, and many more. The encouragement and collaboration among these Network members is truly one of a kind. It's not just impacting their own lives and programs, it's truly transforming the lives of those they serve."
