Here's when free roaming species can become challenging. 💉 You've probably heard us mention before that the animals of Fossil Rim live in near natural environments, which is great for herd dynamics. However, it does make it more difficult to treat animals when they need it. So we use methods that make sense for "wild" animals, much like when Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi, the Government of Chad and Sahara Conservation reintroduced the scimitar horned oryx. You have to get access to a herd of animals with as minimal an impact as possible. Let us tell you, these folks have this system down to a science. #wildlifeconservation #endangeredspecies #scimitarhornedoryx #saharaconservation #fossilrim

An Attwater's prairie chicken's dating life depends on dancing. 🕺 Fossil Rim Wildlife Center has between 20-24 breeding pairs each year. Adults are housed in pens where birds are encouraged to see their neighbors. Starting in late January through May, male APC will perform their breeding displays for the females. Typically, in the wild, males will gather early in the morning in large groups called leks. In captivity, our males are able to see and hear their neighbors to simulate this environment. At these lekking grounds, males will perform their unique song and dance. This display can be heard over a quarter mile away enticing females to come that direction!. A male’s performance consists of a series of dance moves including foot stomps and twirls, followed by several vocalizations of booming calls, whoops and kackles. Males will compete with each other for the best performance. A dance display will take place regardless of a female being present, but it will increase when one is in the area. Females can be choosy and may not breed with a male after his first performance. If she has found the right male for her and is ready to breed, she will squat down and droop her wings. #NationalDanceDay #attwatersprairiechicken #birdlovers #endangeredspecies #FossilRim #endangeredbird

Have you ever heard of a soft open? This is a prairie chickens soft open. When introducing captive birds into the wild, the APC conservation program participates in what is called a soft release. when introducing captive birds into the wild. Captive birds are placed into acclimation pens for two weeks. The acclimation pens are similar to the captive enclosures the birds have experienced at Fossil Rim. These settings allow the animals to become used to their new climate, sights and sounds. Keeping the birds in an enclosed space for a few days after transport allows biologists to make sure birds traveled well, are healthy and that all tracking equipment is functioning before the final release stage. During a soft release, pen doors are opened and birds are allowed to walk out into the vast prairie on their own. Any stragglers are given a gentle nudge. To help the captive raised birds acclimate to their new surroundings, they will continue to receive supplemental food in the form of frozen veggies and water dishes. We introduce veggie trays to the birds in captivity to ensure they are able to find some familiar food. Birds will continue to receive supplemental food for a few days post release and then are encouraged to forage more across the prairie. Any birds with a radio collar are monitored daily to track their movements and survival after release. #attwatersprairiechicken #endangeredspecies #fossilrim #wildlifeconservation
