Names have been changed to protect the innocent/guilty. In July, Mary, a trusted friend and medical provider told me to expect a phone call from Jack who, in addition to his already overloaded demanding duties, had been delegated the task of evaluating employee benefits for his employer of 25 employees. Jack already had a full plate, didn’t want to take this on, but he was “drafted” into the role by default. In a conversation with Mary, his wife’s employer, Jack was referred to me. After procrastinating for several months and finding himself under a suddenly impending deadline for open enrollment, Jack finally called me in October. Here’s how the conversation went - Jack “Hey Steve, Mary suggested I call you. I would like your candid, unbiased opinion. Is the XYZ Healthcare Level Funded option a ‘legitimate plan’? Steve “Well, yes …” and then, as I paused for a second … Jack “Okay, thanks, bye.” Bottom Line – Jack didn’t really want to learn more, he just wanted to short circuit the process, spend as little time on the task as possible, get this item off his desk, be done with it, move on and make it appear to his boss that he had sought a “second opinion” in order to validate his premature conclusion, regardless of its suitability for his employer and fellow employees. Too bad, Jack! By not being open to a proper, comprehensive review, your employer and fellow employees missed opportunities to improve benefits, manage costs, reduce payroll taxes while gaining employee participant appreciation and satisfaction. Note to Employer – Next time delegate the job to someone else – not Jack!
